Question 15 (8 Marks)
In the musical scale there are 12 notes in every octave, such that the frequency of each note follows the
geometric distribution
1
𝑓𝑛 = (212 ) 𝑓𝑛−1

where 𝑓𝑛 is the frequency of the note, measured in hertz (Hz).

After 12 notes, the same note reoccurs, but one octave higher. For example, if the note is a G, 12 notes later
in the sequence, another 𝐺 occurs.
The frequency 440 Hz corresponds to the note middle 𝐴.
(a) Clearly state the common ratio between the terms in the geometric sequence and hence, establish 2
the formula for the frequency of the nth term in the form 𝑓𝑛 = 𝑎𝑟 𝑛−1 , given 𝑓1 = 440.
