Experiment No. 01
To Study the Behavior of Truss Under Loading.

Objectives: To determine the force in a member of statically


determinate truss and study effects of loading on the truss.

Apparatus:
1. Load and Hangers
2. Measuring Scale
3. Spring Balance
4. Truss Apparatus
Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:

1. Take statically determinate truss and measure its lengths.


2. Note the zero error in the spring balance, attached to the member BC before applying load.
3. Apply load of known quantity at the top of the truss with the help of hanger.
4. Note the reading from the spring balance attached to member BC which is the force developed in
that member due to applied load.
5. Now again measure the length of all the members of the truss.
6. Calculate difference between lengths of members before and after the application of load.
7. Calculate force in member BC theoretically by any suitable method.
8. Repeat the process by applying different loads on the truss.
9. Compare the experimental values of force in member BC with theoretical values by finding
percentage difference.

Experimental Verification of method of consistent deformation for one degree indeterminate
beam subjected to point load.

Objectives:
To determine the value of vertical reaction By by
using method of consistent deformation.
Apparatus:
1. Loads and Hangers

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Measure the length of beam with the help of measuring scale.
2. Apply load at the center of the beam.
3. Note dial gauge reading at the end of beam (∆𝐵 ) after applying load after removing support B.
4. Take three readings from dial gauge against applied load and take average of these readings.
5. Now remove the first load and apply unit load on beam after removing the roller support.
6. Note readings from dial gauge at the end of beam after applying unit load.
7. Take three readings from dial gauge against unit load and take average of three readings.
8. Use compatibility equation for the beam and calculate reaction at point B (By).



Experimental Verification of method of consistent deformation for one degree indeterminate
beam subjected to UDL.

Objectives:
To find out support reaction i.e. By by method of

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Measure the length of beam with the help of measuring scale.
2. Apply UDL on the beam which is 0.011 N/mm.
3. Note reading from dial gauge at the middle of the beam after applying UDL.
4. Take three readings from dial gauge against UDL and take average of these readings.
5. Now remove the UDL and apply unit load on beam at point B.
6. Note reading from dial gauge after applying unit load at point B.
7. Take three readings from dial gauge against unit load and take average of these readings.
8. Use compatibility equation for the beam and calculate reaction at point B.



Experimental Verification of method of consistent deformation for two degree indeterminate
beam subjected to point load.
Objectives:
To determine vertical reactions By and Cy on roller
supports by using method of consistent
deformation.

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Measure the length and cross section of the beam with the help of measuring scale.
2. Apply two hangers on beam at the distance of L/4 from fixed and roller supports.
3. Place two dial gauges at point B and C set dial gauge readings to zero.
4. Apply two point loads at point D and E and note readings of deflection from both dial gauges.
They will be ΔB and ΔC.
5. Now remove the loads and apply unit loads on beam at point B and C.
6. Note both dial gauge readings.
7. Use compatibility equations to calculate reactions.

To Determine the Horizontal Thrust in a Square Frame Using Method of Consistent
Deformation.

Objectives:
To determine the value of vertical reaction Dy by using method of
consistent deformation.
Apparatus:

4. Dial Gauge
5. Square Frame
Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted in lab to perform this experiment:
1. Take a square frame and measure its dimensions using measuring scale.
2. Attach the dial gauge at point D, slightly above the roller support and set it to zero.
3. Apply load at a distance of L/3 from the fixed support as shown in figure.
4. Note the value of deflection from the dial gauge in millimeters.
5. Now remove the previous load and apply redundant load of 1N horizontally on the frame near
roller support using pulley mechanism.
6. Keeping dial gauge at the same location, note the value of deflection from the dial gauge in
millimeter.
7. Now using compatibility equation, calculate the value of horizontal thrust.

To Determine the Horizontal Thrust in a Square Frame Using Method of Least Work.

Objectives:

Least Work.

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:

1. Take a square frame and measure its dimensions using measuring scale.
2. Attach the dial gauge at point D, slightly above the roller support and set it to zero.
3. Apply load of known quantity at a distance of L/3 from the fixed support.
4. Note the value of deflection from the dial gauge in millimeters.
5. Keeping dial gauge at the same location, apply load horizontally on the frame near roller support
using pulley mechanism.
6. This applied load will be horizontal thrust.
7. Use method of least work to calculate the theoretical values of horizontal thrust.
8. Compare experimental values of horizontal thrust with theoretical values and find percentage

Experimental Verification of Square Frame with Symmetrical Loading is without Sideway, and

Objectives:
To show that sideway deflection of square frame under symmetrical
loading is zero and finding out horizontal thrust by using slope-
deflection method.

Apparatus:

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Take a square frame and measure its dimensions using measuring scale.
2. Attach the dial gauge at point D, slightly above the roller support and set it to zero.
3. Apply point load (P) of known value at a distance of L/2 from the fixed support.
4. Note the value of deflection from the dial gauge in millimeter, it must be equal to zero.
5. Now, calculate sideway deflection theoretically by using following formulas.

of Ψ and calculate Δ theoretically.

To Determine Sideway Deflection of Statically Indeterminate Square Frame Under Uniform


Loading and Horizontal Load.

Objectives:
To find out the sideway deflection of statically indeterminate
square frame under uniform load and horizontal load, by using
slope-deflection method.
Apparatus:
1. Square Frame
2. Measuring Scale
3. Hanger
4. Dial Gauge
5. UDL

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Take a square frame and measure its dimensions using measuring scale.
2. Attach the dial gauge at point D, slightly above the roller support and set it to zero.
3. Apply UDL on frame.
4. Note the value of deflection from the dial gauge in millimeter, it must be equal to zero.
5. Now, calculate sideway deflection theoretically by using following formulas.

To Draw ILD of One Degree Indeterminate Beam.

Objectives:
To draw the influence line diagram by using method of
consistent deformation.
Apparatus:
1. Loads and Hangers
2. Measuring Scale
3. Beam
4. Dial Gauge
Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Take a beam and measure its dimensions using measuring scale.
2. Attach the dial gauge slightly below the roller support and set it to zero.
3. Apply unit load at each point (A, B, C, D and E) and find the deflection at constant point (B).
4. Note the value of deflection from the dial gauge in millimeters.
5. Now using compatibility equation, calculate the value of horizontal thrust.

6. Use method of consistent deformation to calculate the theoretical values.
7. Compare the experimental values of horizontal thrust with theoretical values and find percentage
difference.

To Find Out the Horizontal Thrust of a Semi-Circular Arch and Draw ILD for Reaction.
Objectives:
To determine the Horizontal Thrust in semi-circular
arch by using method of least work.
Apparatus:
1. Hangers.
2. Scale.
3. Weights.
4. Semi-Circular Arch.
5. Dial gauge.

Procedure:
Following procedure is adopted while performing experiment:
1. Set the apparatus and measure the span length and crown height.
2. Keep the lever out of contact.
3. Now put the hanger at a specific distance where the load is applied.
4. Apply load of known quantity at a specific distance from left side.
5. Calculate the horizontal movement of moving hinge with increase in load.
6. Repeat the experiment for at least three readings.
7. Use method of Least Work to calculate the theoretical values of horizontal thrust
