Assignment-3
1. Three coils each of 5 Ω resistance and 6 Ω inductive reactance are connected in closed
delta and supplied from a three phase 440 volt. Calculate the line and phase currents,
power factor of the system and intake power in watts.
Write down the expressions for the current flowing when this voltage is applied across:
[ANS: iL = 97.58 A; iph = 56.33 A; p.f. = 0.64 (lagging); P=47.61 KW]
2. A balanced star-connected load with (6+j8) Ω per phase is connected to a three-phase 440
Volts supply. Find the line current, power factor, active power, reactive power and
apparent power. [ANS: 25.404 A; 0.6 (lagging); 11.616 KW; 15.488 KVAR; 19.360 KVA]
3. Three coils each having a resistance of 10 Ω and inductance of 0.02 H are connected in (i)
star and (ii) delta to a three-phase 50 Hz ac supply, the line voltage being 500 Volts.
Calculate for each case the line current and the total power taken from the supply.
[ANS: (a) Star: 24.46 A; 17.94 KW and
(b) Delta: 73.39 A; 53.83 KW]
6. Three similar coils connected in star, take a total power of 1.5 Kw at a p.f. of 0.2 lagging
from a 3-phase, 400 V, 50 Hz ac supply. Calculate the resistance and inductance of each
coil. [ANS: 4.27 Ω; 0.0665 H]
7. Three similar coils each having a resistance of 5 Ω and an inductance of 0.02 H are
connected in delta to a 440 V, 3-phase 50 Hz ac supply. Calculate the line current and total
power absorbed. [ANS: 94.90 A; 44.98 KW]
8. Three identical coils connected in delt across 400 V, 50 Hz ac supply, take a line current of
17.32 A at a p.f. of 0.8 lagging. Calculate: [ANS: 10 A; 32 Ω; 76.3943 mH; 3200 watt]
a. The phase currents
b. The resistance and inductance of each coil
c. The power drawn by each coil
