Assignment 5 - MSE458

The document outlines Assignment 5 for MSE 458: Process Dynamics and Control, due on July 17, 2023. It includes problems related to a second-order system's response to a step change, analysis of a series of non-interacting tanks, and calculations for a liquid-level system with specific parameters. Students are required to derive transfer functions and analyze system dynamics based on given conditions.

MSE 458: Process Dynamics and Control Second Semester, 2022/2023

12th June, 2023

Assignment 5
Due on the 17th
of July, 2023 latest by 10:30 am to the Teaching Assistants
1. Consider a second-order system with the following transfer function:

𝑦̅(𝑠) 1
𝐺(𝑠) = = 2
𝑚
̅(𝑠) 𝑠 + 𝑠 + 1

Introduce a step change of 5 into the system and find

(i) Percent overshoot
(ii) Decay ratio
(iii) Maximum value of y(t)
(iv) Rise time and
(v) Period of oscillation

2. Two non-interacting tanks are connected in series as shown in Fig. 1. The time constants are
𝜏2 = 1 and 𝜏1 = 0.5; R2 = 1.

Fig.1

(i) Deduce the overall transfer function of this tank system.

(ii) From the overall transfer function, what is the overall order of the system?
(iii)Assuming there is a unit-step, is introduced for the in-let flow rate, write an expression
in the t-domain to represent the response.

3. In the liquid-level system shown in Fig. 2, the deviation in flow rate to the
first tank is an impulse function of magnitude 5. The following data apply: Al =
1 ft2, A2 = A3 = 2 ft2, R1 = 1 ft/cfm, R2 = 1.5 ft/cfm
Determine expressions for transfer function of
(i) Tank 1,
(ii) Tank 2 and
(iii) Tank 3, where H1, H2, and H3 are deviations in tank level for tanks, 1, 2, and 3.
