Homework 14_IntroCtrlSys_Fall2012

Homework 14 for the Introduction to Control Systems course requires students to work in groups to solve two problems involving the design of compensators for given control systems. Each problem specifies performance criteria such as percent overshoot, settling time, and steady-state error, along with the need to plot root loci and simulate the systems using Matlab. Teamwork is emphasized, as students will be evaluated on their collaborative understanding of the solutions presented in class.

Homework 14

Course: Introduction to Control Systems

Class: CT09TIEN
Due date: 07/11/2012
Work in group to solve the following problems:

Prolem 1 (5 points)
R(s) Y(s)
+ Gc(s) G(s)

Figure 1

Given the control system in figure 1, in which:

16
G( s) 
s( s  5)
Design the compensator GC(s) so that the closed-loop system has POT10% and ts1.5sec (5%
criterion) and steady-state error to unit ramp input is less than 0.02.
Plot the root locus before and after compensation and simulate the system using Matlab to verify the
result.

Prolem 2 (5 points)
Given the control system in figure 1, in which:
4( s  5)
G( s) 
( s  1)( s 2  4 s  10)
Design the compensator GC(s) so that the closed-loop system has POT10% and ts1.0sec (2%
criterion) and steady-state error to unit step input is less than 0.02. Plot the root locus before and after
compensation and simulate the system using Matlab to verify the result.

Remember to work in group and make sure that all your group members understand the
solutions. I will evaluate your teamwork by asking random students to present your solutions in
front of the class.
