THE PRESENTATION

This presentation will give you some ideas about Power

Transformers used in KSEBL
Concentration will be give to Common Testing methods done in
field

Brief Flow of the Presentation.

1. General: Name Plate
2. Type of cooling
3. Percentage Impedance
4. WTI and OTI
5. Buchholz Relay
6. OSR
7. PRV
Name Plate Details
Please Note
• MVA capacity depends on type of cooling
• ONAN, ONAF, ODAF
• There are certain bushing CT s meant for WTI,
OTI Etc
• There allowable temperature range provided
in name plate
• Information about aircell shall be given in
name plate or separate plate
ONAN
ONAF
Percentage impedance
• The percentage impedance of a transformer
is the volt drop on full load due to the
winding resistance and leakage reactance
expressed as a percentage of the rated
voltage. It is also the percentage of the
normal terminal voltage required to circulate
full-load current under short circuit
conditions.
WTI and OTI
• The WTI means winding temperature
Indicator and OTI means Oil Temperature
Indicator which indicates the winding
temperature & oil temperature of
the transformer and operates the alarm, trip,
and cooler control contacts.This instrument
operates on the principle of thermal imaging
and it is not an actual measurement.
Buchholz relay
OSR Relay
• It is mainly used to limit the damage to the on
load tap changer in case of failure. OSR is
placed in between OLTC(On Load Tap
Changer) tank and OLTC conservator.
• Oil surge relay responds only by rate of rise
pressure resulting from internal arcing. When
rate of rise pressure oil cross certain value
then alarm and trip contacts operate.
OSR relay
PRV
• The working principle
of transformer pressure relief
device is very simple. If
pressure arises inside
a transformer and exceeds a
pre-set pressure limit, the
pressure safety valve opens
its valve clap, which is held by
a spring and releases the
internal pressure until it
declines.

• APPLICATION :
• It is fitted in the conservator of oil filled transformer. It
is held in a position by connecting flange and two
straps on either side. When oil level in conservator
increases, air cell gets deflated thereby expelling air
out and when oil level drops, air cell inflates and
allows air to come in. Thus air cell breathes without
allowing outside air to get in contact with
transformer oil. These Air Cells are being supplied to
many reputed transformer manufacturers in India.

Transformer Tertiary Winding
⚫ Tertiary Winding : One point
of delta connection shall be
connected to Ground
It is desirable that a
three-phase transformer should have one
set of three-phase windings connected
in delta thus providing a low-impedance
path for third-harmonic currents. The
presence of a delta connected winding also
allows current to circulate around
the delta in the event of unbalance in the
loading between phases, so that this
unbalance is reduced and not so greatly fed
back through the system.
Earthing transformer
(Used in Middle East countries)
• If our transformer 110/11 kv is Star
Delta , In order to get the benefit of
earthing a special transformer with
zig –zag winding is used. It offer very
less impedance for zero sequence
components.
• Such delta 11 kv eliminates the
use of tertiary winding
• Generally has 440 V 3ph
secondary used for aux supply.
