B-Tech-PDE-Assignment-VI

The document is an assignment for the Partial Differential Equations course at the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar. It includes nine questions related to finding steady-state temperature distributions in various geometrical shapes, such as semicircular plates, circular quadrants, and annuli, under different boundary conditions. Each question requires the application of mathematical techniques to solve for temperature distributions based on given conditions.

ASSIGNMENT-VI

Subject: Partial Differential Equations (MA2L004) B. Tech./Dual Degree (4th Semester)

INSTRUCTIONS: ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Q1. In a semicircular plate of radius a with bounding diameter at 0◦ C and the circumference at 100◦ C. Find
the steady-state temperature.

Q2. Find the steady-state temperature is a circular plate of radius a which has one half of its circumference
at 0◦ C and the other half at K ◦ C, (K ̸= 0).

Q3. The bounding radii θ = 0 and θ = π/2 of a circular quadrant are kept at 0◦ C and the temperature
along the curve is kept at 50 (πθ − 2θ2 )◦ C. Find the temperature distribution at any point of the plate
and also at (a/2, π/4) if the radius is a.

Q4. In a semicircular plate of radius a with bounding diameter at 0◦ C and the circumference at T ◦ C, show
that the steady-state temperature distribution is given by

4T X 1 r 2n−1
u(r, θ) = sin(2n − 1)θ.
π n=1 2n − 1 a

Q5. The bounding diameter of a semicircular plate of radius 10 cm is kept at 0◦ C and the temperature
along the semicircular boundary is given by
(
50 θ for 0 < θ < π
u(10, θ) =
50 (π − θ) for π/2 ≤ θ < π.

Find the steady-state temperature function u(r, θ) at any point of the plate.

Q6. A plate in the shape of a truncated quadrant of a circle is bounded by r = a, r = b and θ = 0, θ = π/2.
It has its faces insulated and heat flows in plane curves. It is kept at temperature 0◦ C along three
of the edges while along the edge r = a, it is kept at the temperature θ(π/2 − θ)◦ C. Determine the
steady-state temperature distribution.

Q7. A plate with insulated surfaces has the shape of a quadrant of a circle of radius 10 cm. The bounding
radii θ = 0 and θ = π/2 are kept at 0◦ C and the temperature along the circular quadrant is kept at
100(πθ −√ 2θ2 )◦ C, for 0 < θ < π/2 until steady-state conditions prevail. Find the temperature at the
point (40 2/3π, π/4).

Q8. Along the inner boundary of a circular annulus of radii 10cm and 20cm the temperature is maintained
as T (10, θ) = 15 cos θ, and along the outer boundary the distribution T (20, θ) = 30 sin θ is maintained.
Find the steady-state temperature at an arbitrary point (r, θ) in the annulus.

Q9. A plate in the form of a ring is bounded by the lines r = 2 and r = 4. Its surfaces are insulated and the
temperature u(r, θ) along the boundaries are u(2, θ) = 10 cos θ + 6 sin θ and u(4, θ) = 17 cos θ + 15 sin θ.
Find the steady-state temperature in the ring.
