SECTION A: (40 MARKS)


Attempt ALL the questions in this section
1. Automobile steering system assists drivers when driving the vehicle along the road. List
THREE main components of the steering system. (3 Marks)
2. A steering system is a critical system in a vehicle. State THREE functions of a good steering
system of an automobile. (3 Marks)
3. A good steering system must meet a number of functional requirements. Outline THREE
of these requirements. (3 Marks)
4. There are several types of steering geometry terms. Differentiate the following steering
geometry terms. (4 Marks)
(a) Toe-in
(b) Toe-out.
5. Define the term steering ratio as used in vehicle steering system. (2 Marks)
6. Steering linkages are mechanical components that provide relative motion between two
components. Name THREE parts of these linkages. (3 Marks)
7. Caster angle is one of the steering geometry angles. Differentiate between positive and
negative caster angle. (2 Marks)
8. Power steering aids the driver in turning the wheels for steering. State THREE reasons
why power steering would be preferred over hydraulic power steering. (3 Marks)
9. For a steering system to be complete, there must be a steering gearbox. State TWO major
functions of steering gear box in automobile steering system. (2 Marks)
10. Steering system has got various types of steering gear box; name any THREE of these
steering gearboxes. (3 Marks)
11. There are several conditions that should be considered to have a wheel directional stability.
List THREE of these conditions. (3 Marks)
12. A driver experiences a hard steering when driving his car, as an expert, name THREE
causes of this hard-steering problem. (3 Marks)
13. A truck driver came to a general motor company complaining that one of the trucks wheels
was wobbling. State FOUR causes of the wobble. (3 Marks)
14. State THREE causes of excessive play in the steering system. (3 Marks)

a) Outline FOUR advantages of an electronic power steering over hydraulic

b) State FOUR disadvantages of power assisted steering system. (4 Marks)
c) Personal protective equipment’s are used to prevent or minimize exposure to
hazards. Explain SIX personal protective equipment. (12 Marks)

a) The angular difference between the aimed direction and the direction on motion is
known as the slip angle. List FIVE factors that determines the value of this slip

b) Sketch a worm and sector steering gearbox and label all the parts. (7 Marks)
c) Power steering pump is a very crucial component in the steering system. Explain
FOUR functions of the steering pump. (8 Marks)
