What is Syntax? ● Syntax is one of the four systems that responsible for sentence structure.
● Syntax helps us understand how sentences
work.
● Syntax uses word order such as
subject-verb-object.
Example 1: I want my Dad to come home!
Example 2: I like cookies! Activity Time! Sentence Scrambles ● The words given are used to make a sentence ● All of the words must be used ● Once you have completed your sentence, put your head down on your desk ● Have Fun! Sentences Combining
● Words on index cards are given to
combine two sentences. ● Work with a partner ● Once you and your partner are done combining two sentences, they will use those sentences to combine into one sentence. ● When done combining, please flip them over. ● Enjoy! How Does Teaching Syntax Help English Language Learners (ELL)? Let’s Do Some Reading and Writing ● According to the department of Elementary and Secondary Education, ● “Knowledge of how grammatical elements such as pronouns, lexical references, and connectives function in sentences allows young children to follow the ideas in a sentence and understand its meaning (Oakhill, Cain, & Elbro, 2015).” (Para. 4).
By understanding syntax ELL students will be able
to read and write grammatically correct sentences. By understanding syntax ELL students will be vocabulary words by understanding how a sentence is formulated. Let’s Use Our Ears ● According to the department of Elementary and Secondary Education, ● “Children do not need to know the names of these grammatical terms, but they do need to develop understanding of how sentences work in natural speech and in text. Working with sentences can be part of a class's engagement with complex text. ” (para. 4).
Having an understanding of sentence structure will
help ELL students understand how to properly explain their thoughts in English.Understanding syntax also helps ELL students with developing their Phonics.
