Engineering Design Process: A Student's Guide to Problem-Solving

What is the Engineering Design Process?
The Engineering Design Process is a series of steps that engineers and designers
use to solve problems and create solutions. Think of it as a roadmap that helps you
turn your ideas into reality!
The Steps of the Engineering Design Process:
1. Ask
 Identify the problem that needs solving
 Ask questions to understand the challenge better
 Define what success looks like
 List any limitations or constraints
2. Research
 Gather information about the problem
 Learn from existing solutions
 Talk to people who might use your solution
 Take notes on what you discover
3. Imagine
 Brainstorm different possible solutions
 Let your creativity flow
 Draw rough sketches of your ideas
 Don't judge ideas yet - all ideas are good ideas!
4. Plan
 Pick your best solution
 Draw detailed designs
 Make a list of needed materials
 Create step-by-step instructions
5. Create
 Build your prototype
 Follow your plan
 Keep track of what works and what doesn't
 Remember: it's okay if it's not perfect!
6. Test
 Try out your solution
 Get feedback from others
 Take notes on what works
 Identify what needs improvement
7. Improve
 Make changes based on testing
 Try new ideas
 Keep making it better
 Remember: engineers often repeat these steps many times!
Real-World Example:
Imagine you want to design a better backpack for school. You would:
 Ask: What problems do students have with current backpacks?
 Research: Look at different backpack designs
 Imagine: Sketch new backpack ideas
 Plan: Choose your best design
 Create: Make a prototype
 Test: Have friends try it out
 Improve: Make it even better based on feedback
Remember: The Engineering Design Process is not just for engineers - you can use it
to solve all kinds of problems in your daily life!

Short-Answer Sample Answers
1. It is important to ask questions to fully understand the problem, know the
needs of users, and define success before designing a solution.
2. Research can help improve a design by showing what has already been tried,
avoiding past mistakes, and finding new materials or ideas.
3. If two ideas seem equally good, you could test small versions of both or
gather feedback from others to decide which one is better.
4. Testing a prototype helps find weaknesses in the design and allows
improvements before making the final product.
5. The Engineering Design Process is useful in many areas of life, such as
planning a school project or designing a new way to organize a room.
