HCI Semester Project

The project involves designing and prototyping a user-centered application based on HCI principles, focusing on usability and interaction design. Students will conduct user research, create wireframes, and develop a functional prototype using Figma, culminating in a final presentation. Assessment will be based on various criteria including research, usability testing, and project quality.

Project Title: User-Centered Application Development Using HCI Principles

Objective

This semester-long project requires student groups to design and prototype a user-centred
application that aligns with HCI design principles. The project emphasises usability,
interaction design, and evaluation techniques to enhance user experience.

Students will:

 Apply HCI concepts to design interactive applications.

 Utilise user research methods for interface design.
 Develop a functional prototype using Figma.
 Implement HCI evaluation techniques.

Project Schedule (Week 1 to 9)

Week Tasks Deliverables

Week 1 Understanding the Users User research report & Personas
- Identify user needs and personas.
- Conduct user research
(surveys/interviews).
Week 2 Designing User Interaction Interaction framework document
- Define interaction models & styles.
- Identify ergonomics & accessibility
considerations.
Week 3 Wireframing & Conceptual Design Low-fidelity wireframes
- Create initial low-fidelity wireframes.
- Define experience & engagement
elements.
Week 4 Prototyping (Iteration 1) Prototype V1 (basic UI)
- Develop the first prototype in Figma.
- Apply principles of usability &
heuristics.

Project Guidelines

1. Application Theme:
o The application can be from any domain (Education, Healthcare, E-commerce,
Productivity, Social, etc.).
o Must address real-world user problems with an intuitive interface.
2. User-Centered Design Approach:
o Conduct user research to understand target users.
o Use personas and scenarios to drive design choices.
3. Prototype Development with Figma:
o Use Figma for wireframing, prototyping, and user interface (UI) design.
o Ensure consistency in visual design, color schemes, and layout.
4. Evaluation & Testing:
o Apply usability heuristics and user testing.
o Iterate based on feedback.
5. Presentation:
o Each group will present their project in Week 10.
o Demonstrate the Figma prototype and justify design decisions.
