Handout 1: Pollution Sources

Introduction:
Pollution is the introduction of harmful substances or products into the environment. It affects
the air, water, soil, and even living organisms. There are various sources of pollution, and
understanding them is crucial to mitigating its impacts on the planet.

Main Sources of Pollution:

1. Industrial Emissions:
Factories, power plants, and refineries release pollutants into the air, such as carbon
dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxides. These gases contribute to air pollution and
acid rain.
2. Vehicle Exhaust:
Cars, trucks, and other vehicles emit pollutants like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides,
and particulate matter, which degrade air quality and harm human health.
3. Agricultural Runoff:
Fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides used in agriculture can run off into nearby water
bodies, polluting them with toxic chemicals that affect aquatic life.
4. Plastic Waste:
Improper disposal of plastic products leads to accumulation in landfills, oceans, and other
ecosystems. Plastics take hundreds of years to decompose, harming wildlife.
5. Oil Spills:
Large-scale oil spills from ships, pipelines, or drilling platforms pollute oceans, killing
marine life and damaging habitats for years.

Effects of Pollution:

 Deterioration of air and water quality

 Destruction of ecosystems
 Health problems such as respiratory diseases
 Global warming and climate change
