Quadratics

The document provides an overview of quadratic equations, including their general forms, solutions, and methods for solving them such as factorization, quadratic formula, completing the square, and graphing. It explains that quadratic equations have a maximum power of 2, resulting in two solutions or roots. Additionally, it discusses how to sketch the graph of a quadratic function, identifying key features like concavity and turning points.

Quadratic Equations: (When maximum power is 2)

Quadratic Equation in one variable

Quadratic Equation in two variables

Quadratic Equation in One Variable:

General Form of a Quadratic Equation:

where,
is the coefficient (number in front) of the term
is coefficient (number in front) of the x term
is the constant term (number on its own)

Solution of Quadratic Equations:

What does solving an equation mean?

→ It means find the values of
→ No. of solutions = Power of equation
→ Since quadratic equation has power 2 so it will have 2 solutions or
answers
→ The values are also called the roots of the equation or solutions of the
equation.

Methods of solving Quadratic Equations:

a) Using Factorization
b) Using Quadratic Formula
c) Using Completing Square method
d) Using Graph

To solve a quadratic equation it must equal to 0.

To solve a quadratic equation it must equal to 0.
Make sure the quadratic equation is in the general form.

Example 1:

Solve the quadratic equation

Solution:

a) Using Factorization

Either, or

b) Using Quadratic Formula

Here,

Put the values in Quadratic Formula

c) Using completing square method

Step 1: Take the coefficient of middle term and find the half of that value then
take its square

Step 2: Add and subtract

Taking square root on both sides

Sketching Quadratic Graph:

The graph of a quadratic function is a curve called 'parabola'.

Step 1: Rearrange the equation into general form

Step 2: Check the coefficient of

The coefficent of

If i.e. if is positive, then the curve will be a concave up.

If i.e. if is negative, then the curve will be a concave down.

Step 3: Find the

Step 5: Find the turning point of the graph using completing square

The turning point maybe a maximum or a minimum depending on the overall

shape of the graph.

If the graph is a concave up , it has a minimum point.

If the graph is a concave down , it has a maximum point.

After finding and the turning point of the graph, place

these points on the xy-plane and then draw a smooth curve passing through
