MAEG5150 Assignment 3

Submission Deadline: April 17, 2019 (Wednesday)

Problem 1. The model car in the following figure weighs 17 N and is to be accelerated from rest
by a 1-cm-diameter water jet moving at 75 m/s. Neglecting air drag and wheel friction, estimate
the velocity of the car after it has moved forward 1 m.

Problem 2. A reasonable approximation for the two-dimensional incompressible laminar

boundary layer on the flat surface the following figure is

(a) Assuming a no-slip condition at the wall, find an expression for the velocity component v(x, y)
for y ≤ δ;

(b) Then find the maximum value of v at the station x = 1 m, for the particular case of airflow,
when U = 3 m/s and δ = 1.1 cm.
Problem 3. Consider a steady, two-dimensional, incompressible flow of a Newtonian fluid with
the velocity field u = –2xy, v = y2 – x2, and w = 0.
(a) Does this flow satisfy conservation of mass?
(b) Find the pressure field p(x, y) if the pressure at point (x = 0, y = 0) is equal to pa.

Problem 4. For Newtonian fluid, the general expression of y component momentum equation is

Dv p    u v      v 2      v w  
   g y            2   V       
Dt y x   y x   y   y 3   z   z y  

Simplify this equation for incompressible flow with a constant viscosity.

Problem 5. For steady Newtonian incompressible flow with a constant viscosity, the momentum
equation is

 u u u  p   2 u  2u  2u 
 u  v  w    gx     2  2  2 
 x y z  x  x y z 
 v v v  p   2v  2v  2v 
 u  v  w   gy     2  2  2 
 x y z  y  x y z 
 w w w  p  2w 2w 2w 
 u v  w    gz     2  2  2 
 x y z  z  x y z 

̅, 𝑢′ , 𝑣 ′ , 𝑤 ′ for the expressions

Derive the Reynolds Average Navier Stokes equations using 𝑢̅, 𝑣̅ , 𝑤
when the gravitational force is negligible.
