Intro
While browsing the net I came across some videos of a Audi A3 8P that parked itself. Upon later
digging I found out the A3 8P came with the option PLA (Park Lane Assist “Parkhilfe”). This seemed
like a cool feature to add on my retrofit list so I began digging the requirements.

First of all, you can find the journey it took me to complete the fit in this thread: https://www.audi-
sport.net/xf/threads/retrofitting-pdc-park-distance-control-pla-park-lane-assist.417456/

Next to that I want to give a huuuuuuuuge shoutout to @Troubs12. Troubs already did this fit to his
own A3 8P so he helped me with alot of the partnumbers and wiring. Also a big shoutout to the
people following and helping me with this fit.

Requirements / notes
This guide is done on a A3 8P3 (3th gen) LEFT HAND DRIVE (NL). It’s MJ is 2011 where pre-facelift
cars have some slight different setup. The centre trim I’m talking about is slightly different in pre-
facelift and facelift cars. The facelift cars can order a whole trim with buttons already in it where pre-
facelift should get additional loose buttons to activate the PDC or PLA.

Don’t let the length of this guide scare you since it’s not that much work. This fit can only be done on
A3 with an BCM so 8P2 and 8P3. Earlier 8P1 is not suitable for this fit unfortunatly.

For PLA to be implemented it’s necessary to have both front and rear PDC to be installed. Most A3’s
throughout the 2nd gen are fitted with rear PDC from factory. So did mine A3.

The fit costed me around €300,- you can narrow it down quite alot since I did not make my own
looms and bought Kufatec looms and made some looms myself. Also I did use mainly OEM Audi parts
but most of them are also for sale from our Chinese friends on AliExpress.

There are 2 options in PLA, PLA1.0 and PLA1.5. Both need the same setup in sensors so it’s the
module that makes the difference. @George Kost told me the PDC module ending 'E' and 'J' only
support PLA1.0 (parralel parking) where 'K' and 'P' support PLA1.5 (parralel and multistage parking)

Fitting instructions
Step 1: Locate the PDC module
A. Head over to the trunk and start dissasemble the right sidepanel from the car.
B. The side panel is hold by a screw on the top and with a clip you can pull loose.

Figuur 2: Sidepanel removed

Step 2: Remove the PDC module
A. Remove the existing PDC module from it’s bracket and disconnect the cables.

Figuur 3: Original PDC module

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 3: Repin the module connector terminals
This step requires pinning the Kufatec loom to the existing original PDC loom. The original loom
(when only having rear PDC fitted) contains of two connectors. A beige 16 pins connector (CAN High,
CAN low, Live and Ground) and a black 12 pins connector for the signals of the rear PDC sensors one
12 pins slot remains empty and that slot is for the front PDC sensors obviously.

On the Kufatec loom there will be a beige connector just like the 16 pins but now with 12 pins. This is
the connector for the front PDC signals. Also on the loom are two loose terminals with imprints on
the cable (T16/13 and T16/4). The T16 stands for Terminal 16 and the number after the “/” for the
PIN number, so obviously wire them as follows:

T16/13 in pin 13 of the big beige 16 pins connector

T16/4 in pin 4 of the big beige 16 pins connector

Step 4: Feed the loom to the front
A. Feed the cable to the front.
B. Remove the glovebox (LHD) to feed the cable to other side of the car. This needs to be done
to connect the buttons in the centre, wire the buzzer and get the cable inside the engine
compartment.

Figuur 6: Feed cable to the front up to the glovebox (LHD)

Step 5: Connecting the dashboard centre trim
A. Get the headunit out. Do this with proper radiokeys to prevent damage.
B. The centre trim can be pulled out of it’s bracket quite easily. First time it can be a bit stiff
though.
C. Feed the Kufatec cable to through and connect the black connector that goes into the centre
trim buttons. For pre-facelift cars there is only 1 connector for PDC on the Kufatec loom. An
optional loom for the PLA button is necessary. I didn’t make that in this guide but @George
Kost did, he made a wiring diagram himself as shown below.
D. To feed the cable into the engine compartment it need to be pulled to the other side, to do
this remove the dash panel under the steeringwheel (LHD).

Figuur 9: Remove the dash panel under the steeringwheel column

Step 6: Connecting the buzzer, ground and feed the cable through.
A. On the loom there is a terminal with the imprint “Ground/Masse”. Since the cable is already
under the steeringwheel column connect that ground to the masspoint (earth) under the A-
pillar.
B. Connect the buzzer that beeps fort he front PDC sensors. The original location is shown on
the picture below but very hard to reach and attach. I’ve put some tape on the back and
taped it on a free spot somewhere under the column.
C. The only terminals left on the loom now are the terminals for the front PDC sensors. Feed
these through the firewall into the engine compartment. LHD have a thick rubber right
behind the BCM module. Poke a hole through and stick the loom through this rubber (see
photos). They’ll come out right behind the battery (LHD).

Figuur 11: Poke and feed through

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 7: Removing the battery
A. To pull the cable through completely you need to remove the battery (LHD). Removing the
battery gives much more space to work in.
B. Then connect the wires into the black connector.

Figuur 12: Connecting PDC loom to internal loom

Figuur 13: Pull the cable through and connect the terminals into the black connector

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 8: Wiring the two additional PLA signal wires
The Kufatec loom doesn’t include PLA unfortunatly. Because of this we need to pull two additional
wires from the PDC module in the trunk to the engine compartment too.

A. Locate the PDC module in the back again.

B. Open up the middle connector (beige 12 pins) on the Kufatec loom.
I didn’t had the terminals to create a proper wire, so I used some spare wires from a window
module. Those fit too.
C. Put the pins in T12/9 and T12/10

T12/9 = Signal left PLA sensor.

T12/10 = Signal right PLA sensor.

D. Pull the wires to the engine compartment just like the Kufatec loom.

Figuur 14: Front PDC connector wiring

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 9: PIN the wires in the Kufatec connector
A. Cut the cable on the same lengt as the Kufatec loom. Create a proper connection using
terminals that fit the black connector on the Kufatec loom. Also make sure you use the
rubber to create a watertight solution.

I used the rubbers that are already in the Kufatec connector. It’s a pain in the *** but it works. Audi
and AliExpress sell wires with these terminals already fitted.

B. Do the same thing for the other end obviously.

C. PLA sensors got three wires going in (Live, Signal and Ground). Signal comes from the PDC
module but the live and ground can be tapped from the already exsisting PDC loom for the
other sensors.

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 10: Preparing the frontbumper
You can either cut the holes for your sensors yourself OR get a secondhand (or new) bumper with the
holes pre-cut in them. I think it’s boring and cheating to buy yourself a prepared bumper so I took my
chances and cut the holes myself.

You can cut the holes in different ways, some have a PDC kit that pulls a hole in the bumper, I have
used a stepcutter. The dimensions are as follows (when you use the parts in this guide)

PDC Sensor = 18MM

PLA Sensor (bracket) = 30MM

A. Take the front bumper off

B. On the inside of the bumper Audi already made marks on where to cut. Hard to see but there
are 4 spots marked with a “+” on the inside. Find them and drill the holes in them.
C. Get the brackets and attach them. I molted them down on the inside of the bumper.
D. The PDC sensors can go in any way. But make sure that the PLA bracket is facing tot he back
of the car with it’s “thick” side.

Step 11: Splice into PDC loom
A. Take the PDC loom from Kufatec and splice into the two side sensors as follow;

PIN 1 = Live
PIN 2 = Signal
PIN 3 = Ground

B. Splice into the PIN1 and PIN3 of the side PDC sensors to power and earth the PLA sensors.
C. Get the two signal cables you pulled seperatly from the trunk to the connector.

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 12: Test the setup
A. Now everything is connected hook up VCDS and do a autoscan of the PDC+PLA Module and
see if it throws any errors at you.
B. Head over to the coding section (LINK) and code your module(s).
C. Put the car in reverse and see if the system works.

Figuur 16: PDC front/rear active

Front PDC + PLA Retrofit Audi-sport.net manual © henkkeumus 2020

Step 13: Route loom and finish the mod
A. Now that the bumper is loose make sure to route the cable away from moving parts like the
fan. Ideally you should route the cable neat next to the grille to the other side. I didn’t made
pictures of this step because everyone can make this decision for him/herself and there is no
ideal way of doing this step.
B. Attach the bumper, do a quick scan with VCDS again to check for any errors before fitting
everything to it’s place!!!
C. Get in the car, search for a safe and free spot and see the wheel turn itself!

GOOD LUCK!
