The document explains the operation of relays and transistors as switches. Relays use an electromagnet to control circuits, allowing a low-power signal to switch circuits on or off, while transistors can control a DC motor's operation based on input voltage. Both devices enable automated control without human intervention.

Relay operation

Relays are electromechanical devices that use an electromagnet to operate

a pair of movable contacts from an open position to a closed position. A Relay is
generally used when it is required to control a circuit by a separate low-power
signal, or when several circuits must be controlled by one signal. So relay is a
switch which controls (opens and closes) circuits electro-mechanically. The main
operation of this device is to make or break contact with the help of a signal
without any human involvement in order to switch it ON or OFF.
In the given circuit, 6V relay is powered by a power supply. At the initial
stage when power supply is off, no current flows through coil, hence armature of
relay is connected to NC (Normally Closed), and so LED2 glows.
When the switch is closed, current start flowing through the coil, and by the
concept of electromagnetic induction, magnetic field is generated in the coil
which attracts the movable armature and it gets connected with NO (Normally
Open) pin of the relay. Hence, the LED1 turns ON.
Gradually increase the voltage of relay to demonstrate the switching action.

Transistor as a switch – DC motor on / off

SL100

Our control input flows into the base, the output is tied to the collector,
and the emitter is kept at a fixed voltage. While a normal switch would require an
actuator to be physically flipped, this switch is controlled by the voltage at the
base pin. When input is 5V, motor will rotate. When input is 0V, motor stops.
Keeping input voltage at high level, slowly increase the voltage at collector
terminal. When the motor starts rotating at constant speed, change input to low
level, the motor stops rotating.
