Part II. Topic: Context in literature

Literary context is background information or circumstances you provide to inform why something is taking place;
context can also be the backstory of character, provided to inform their behavior and personality.
It where and when the story takes place and what current events are affecting the people. It is important because it
helps the reader understand more about the novel, it helps them imagine the settings of the story without seeing it.
These are words, sentences, and ideas that come before and after a word or phrase. When you read a passage,
circle any word that you don’t understand. Then, look in the context to find clues—words or phrases that hint at what
the new word means.
It is the background, environment, setting, framework, or surroundings of events or occurrences. Simply, context
means circumstances forming a background of an event, idea or statement, in such a way to enable readers to
understand the narrative or literary piece.
Four types of context in literature:
1. Cultural
2. Historical
3. Social
4. Ideological
Cultural context
-refers to the values, beliefs, lifestyles, and behaviors of a group of people. Such instances will influence whether
something is considered right or wrong by the people involved.
-it also refers to a particular way of life, involving religion, race, nationality, as well as things like food, dress code and
manners.
Historical context
-entangled with its social context, as underlying norms and convention are historically specific. It is important to note
especially when large changes have occurred between the time the work was produced, and our current day, so it is
not assessed by our own concerns alone.
Social context
-is the way in which the features of the society it is set in impact on its meaning.
There are two aspects to social context: the kind of society in which the characters live, and the one in which the
author’s text was produced.

Ideological Context
-refers to the systems of beliefs and ideas that underpin our attitudes and behavior. Such ideology may be valued by
society as a whole, or be the basis of conflict.
-it is a context that is in many ways invisible. This is because our own is largely internalized and normalized, we act
accordingly to our assumptions and social norms.
Literary text
What are the main characteristics of literary texts?
Characteristics of literary text include characters, setting, plot (problem/solution), and sequence these characteristics
help the reader understand who is in the story, where and when the story takes place, what happens in the story,
and how the events happen, etc.

Literary text is a piece of writing, such as book or poem that has the purpose of telling a story or entertaining, as a
text is usually aesthetic, but it may also contain political messages or beliefs
