CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1. Background

English is used in all areas of life, one of which is in education. As it is

known that English is studied starting from junior high school level to

university level. For middle school English must understand and mastered by

students because English is one of the subjects that study in high school.

English is important to be improved by students because it is known that

the current era is increasingly developing. Along with the times, then English,

especially in the field of education, is highly demanded to be developed and

mastered so that education practitioners can compete intelligently by being able

to speak English. For that, school children must be able to communicate in

English. Besides that, why is English so important for student senior high

school? because at that time it will be discovered that someone will continue

education to a higher level namely the tertiary level.

To join college, test are always held in both oral and written forms, and

one of them is an English-speaking test. After entering or being registered as a

student at the college level, English is also back to being one of the subject

classes studied in every high school in every English tertiary institution it

becomes one of the disciplines or departments at the tertiary level. Graduated


from college, then it is time to jump to field or companies also have a certificate

that is not separated from the name of English.

English is one of the requirements in some agencies and even all

agencies. Usually every company opens a job opportunity to state the

requirements that must be met in order to be accepted at the workplace or the

company concerned, which has an English score score or a specific certificate

related to English. Related to the above, then English must really be mastered

by all people, especially high school students.

Which occurs in high school, there is still problems relating to the English

language of students. the problem that is often complained of is the lack of

ability and expertise in writing English. In terms of writing is one of the skills

contained in English, where by writing all the caliph especially students can

pour ideas into written form.

Based on the experience of the researcher at the ground, there is a

problem regarding English language lessons in one of the yunior high schools

(SMA Negeri 1 Tabulahan) or things that could not be solved properly. One of

the problem is the lack of students' ability to write. In things as know that

writing is one that must mastered in linguistics. In writing also the writer must

be rich in vocabulary and have knowledge or know good grammar. As a result,

the teacher needs to consider teaching writing skills well based on the students

needs, abilities and capacities.


One of the good and appropriate methods to overcome the problem is

communicative language teaching (CLT). This method is suitable for language

teaching. Communicative language teaching is a method that can spur students

or participants in being active in language both structurally and in mastering

communication Littlewood in Febrianti (2002: 1) said that:

"One of the most characteristic features of communicative

language teaching is that it pays systemic attention to functional as well

as structural aspects of language, combining these into a fully

communicative view.".

Through this method students will be able to actively communicate

everything about what want to know, especially in displaying ideas in written

form well by applying this method as a communicative method which means

communicating, students will not have any doubts and stop asking questions or

exchanging ideas because the concept of this method really refers to how to

communicate well in written and oral form.

According to the previous statement, the researcher is interested to

conducte a research under the title “The Influence Communicative Language

Teaching (CLT) Method in Improving Students’ Descriptive Writing

Ability at SMA Negeri 1 Tabulahan”


1.2. Problem Statement

Based on the background, problem statement of this research is

formulated as follows: “can the communicative language teaching (CLT)

improve students’ writing ability at SMA Negeri 1 Tabulahan”

1.3. Objective of the Research

In line with the research questions, the purpose of the research is to find

out whether the use communicative language teaching (CLT) improve student’s

writing ability at SMA Negeri 1 Tabulahan”

1.4. Significant of the Research

In this study the researcher hopes this research can provide benefit

conceptually, the main ones:

1.4.1. Theoretical Significant

This research can contribute and expand the scientific outlook on

learning English and expected to increase knowledge in the field of

English language skills.

1.4.2. Practical Significant

a. For Students: Making it easy for students to find for writing and

improving the ability of students to write descriptive text writing.


b. For Teachers: Improving the performance of teachers in the teaching

of writing skill students’ descriptive text writing. Then, it is be used as

a reference for teachers in overcoming difficulties in learning English,

especially teaching writing skills.

c. For Researchers: Applying theory that has been obtained, adding to the

experience of researchers in conducting research on the teaching of

writing.

English has many interrelationships with various aspects of life owned by

human being. English is very important because it is a bridge or communication tool

to be able to enter many fields such as the world of work, education, health,

commerce, technology and others. Someone will be hard to get a good job and

network if they do not master English.

In the school area, students are expected to know English well. It is one of the

subjects at school from junior high school until university level. It is very important

and needed by students because one of the characteristics that reflect that students

have high quality or not is that students can speak English well and write their ideas

in written form. In addition, English is a subject in schools that are included in the

national examination. Thus, the students are obliged to know and understand English

both from theory and practice.

In English, there are four skills that should be mastered, they are: listening,

speaking, reading, and writing. These four skills are used to respond or create

discourse in social life. Therefore, English subjects are directed to develop these

skills so that graduates are able to communicate and speak in English at a certain

literacy level. Writing as one of the English skills has an important role to play daily
life, because through that students can write their ideas, their expressions and

arguments about information, and communicate in written language. Writing is

needed in all fields of life because by writing all the ideas that people have can be

poured into a piece of writing and from the results of that writing it can expose it to

all fields.
