Name of experiment:
“Can You Dissolve The Eggshell of a Raw Egg?””
By: Youssef Ahmed
Grade 3
Tools:
An egg
Regular white vinegar
A wide glass jar with lid
Steps:
1/ Add the egg to a glass jar
2/ Add vinegar (enough to cover the egg and then a little bit more, the egg might float at first
but it will sink later on)
3/ Look for bubbles!
4/ Put on the lid and let sit for a few days, or maybe a week.
5/ Carefully remove the egg from the vinegar. Wash and gently rub off any remaining
eggshell.
Observation:
The egg is covered at first with gas bubbles, and the brown color of the eggshell shell pales,
and after we remove the egg, the eggshell wipes away at a light touch, like wiping away wet
chalk dust. And the egg looks and feels like a rubber ball, we can drop it and it will bounce
around.
Hypothesis:
The vinegar contains acetic acid, and the eggshell contains calcium carbonate. The calcium
carbonate in the eggshell reacts with the acetic vinegar to form a water soluble compound,
calcium acetate and carbon dioxide (CO2) gas (the bubbles around the egg) . This reaction
dissolves the eggshell, but leaves the inner membrane intact.
Result:
The eggshell dissolves very easily, creating a naked egg, that feels and looks like a rubber
ball.
Conclusion:
The acetic acid in the vinegar causes the calcium carbonate in the eggshell to dissolve but the
inner membrane of the egg remains intact. And the egg is naked, looking and feeling like a
rubber ball.
