What is MS PowerPoint?
(short answer)

 Microsoft PowerPoint is a powerful slide show


presentation program.

 It is a standard component of the company's


Microsoft Office suite software, and is bundled
together with Word, Excel, and other office
productivity tools.

 The program uses slides to convey information rich in


multimedia.

using MS-Powerpoint
Some Basic Terms
 Slides: Slides are the individual pages of the presentation
consisting of title, text, graphical objects, images and visuals
created on power point.

 Presentation: A power point presentation is a collection of slides,


handouts, speaker's notes and outline of all the slides. A
presentation file in power point has the extension name .ppt.

 Handouts: Handouts are the notes which are prepared on the


basis of the contents of a presentation file. Hand out are for
distribution to the audience during the presentation so that they
can follow the course of the lecture and refer them in future.

 Speaker Notes: Speaker notes are for the speaker himself which is
used by the presenter during the presentation for explaining the
topic. They consist of a small image of the slide on each page
along with some text.
Animation in MS-Powerpoint

 Animation can help make a PowerPoint


presentation more dynamic, and help make
information more memorable.

 The most common types of animation effects


include entrances and exits.

 You can also add sound to increase the intensity


of your animation effects.
What is a design template in
MS-Powerpoint?
 A PowerPoint template is a pattern or blueprint of
a slide or group of slides that you save as a . pptx
file.

 Templates can contain layouts, colors, fonts,


effects, background styles, and even content.

 You can create your own custom templates and


store them, reuse them, and share them with
others.
Why is PowerPoint over Word?

 Word creates text-based documents


while PowerPoint creates presentations.

 Users generally use Microsoft Word when they


need to create letters, forms, mailings and
reports.

 Users utilize PowerPoint when they need to


create presentations for business meetings,
seminars, workshops or trainings.
Why is PowerPoint
better than Excel?
 Excel's main reason to be is to collect numbers
and data and perform calculations.

 Yes, it does offer charts and graphs, but no real


way to sort multiple charts and show them easily
to a group.

 PowerPoint, on the other hand is made for

What is the purpose of a Master
Slide in Powerpoint?
 A slide master is the top slide in a hierarchy of
slides that stores information about the theme and slide
layouts of a presentation, including the background,
color, fonts, effects, placeholder sizes, and positioning.

 A slide master has a defined set of characteristics,


including the background color, graphic, or gradient;
objects (such as logos, decorative lines, and other
graphics) in the background; headers and footers;
placement and size of text frames; and the formatting
of text.
