Windows 8 Installation

Windows 8, code-named Midori, is a version of Microsoft Windows that was

released on October 26, 2012. This iteration contains some of the biggest changes
Microsoft has made to their operating system since Windows 95. It features new
programming and technology that makes run faster than the previous versions. It
also has a more streamlined look and feel. Windows 8 includes a tablet interface,
called Metro, which is compatible with touch screen displays and stills offers access
to the traditional Windows desktop. Below is an example of the new Windows 8 Start
screen, which replaced the Start button and Start menu.
New Windows 8 and 8.1 features
 Metro interface - Completely new designed interface called Metro that helps
Windows run better as a tablet. Other sections of Windows, for example
the Task Manager, were redesigned.
 Store - New app store that allows you to install Windows apps.
 Microsoft account login - Users can now utilize their Microsoft account to
have access to the same Windows settings across multiple computers.
 More login options - Can now login to Windows using a Pin or picture
password.
 32-bit and 64-bit - Windows 8 is available to be installed as either 32-
bit or 64-bit.
 Improved Windows Defender - Improved Windows Defender with antivirus
capabilities.
 USB 3.0 support - Native support for USB 3.0.
 Xbox Live - Microsoft has also built Windows 8 with Xbox Live integration in
mind.
 Internet Explorer 10 - Internet Explorer 10 is included.

Windows 8.1
On October 18, 2013, Microsoft released Windows 8.1. This free update
added the features mentioned below to Windows 8.
 Start button on the desktop that opens the Start Screen.
 More customization to the Start screen, including resizing tiles, new
backdrops, and the ability to use the desktop wallpaper as a backdrop to the
Start Screen.
 Improvements to the Apps screen.
 Improved Search box that activates by typing anywhere.
 New photo lock screen to show your photos when your computer is locked.
  Better app splitting capabilities including the ability to put three or four on-
screen simultaneously.
 Ability to load straight to the desktop.

Windows 8 system requirements

 1 GHz processor or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)
 1 GB of RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB of RAM for 64-bit
 16 GB of hard drive space for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit
 DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher

The following are the steps on how to install Windows 8 operating system:

Step 1 - Place Windows 8 DVD in your DVD-

ROM drive/Bootable USB and start your PC.
Windows 8 will start to boot up and you will
get the following screen with a rotating
progress bar.

Step 2 - The next screen allows you to

setup your language, time and currency
format, keyboard or input method. Choose
your required settings and click next to
continue.

Step 3 - The next screen allows you to

install or repair Windows 8. Since we are
doing a clean install we will click on "install
now".

Step 4 - The setup process starts as shown.

Step 5 - At this stage you need to type your product key that came with your copy of
Windows 8. Click next once you have entered the product key correctly.

Step 6 - Read the license terms and tick I

accept license terms. Then click next to
continue.

Step 7 - Choose the type of installation you want. Since you are doing a clean install
you need to click on custom.

Step 8 - Choose where you would like to

install Windows 8. If you have one hard drive
you will get an option similar to the image
below. You can click next to continue then
go to step 12.
*If you have more than one drive or partition
then you need to select the appropriate drive
and click next. At this stage you can go to
step 12.
*If you want to partition a large drive then do
not click next. Go to step 9.

Step 9 - If you want to partition an existing

drive then click new. Choose the size of the
partition and click apply.
Step 10 - Click OK to create the partition. Windows will create additional system
partition which you don't have to worry about.

Step 11 - You will notice that you have 3

partitions. Partition 1 is system reserved.
Leave this partition alone. Partition 2 is
30GB primary partition that was created in
the last step. The third partition is
unallocated which means it is not being
used. You can however format it and use it
as a second storage drive. This can be
done after windows installation is finished
so I will leave it for now.
*Choose partition 2 (Primary Partition).
This is where I will install Windows 8. Click
next to continue.

Step 12 - At this stage Windows starts to

copy files to your hard drive and begins the
installation. This process might take a few
minutes depending on your computer
specification. Now is a good time to grab
yourself a coffee.

Step 13 - When all the necessary files are

copied Windows 8 will automatically restart
as shown.

Step 14 - You will go through various progress bar and information messages as
shown on the following images. Windows might restart automatically second time.
 Step 15 - You are now presented with "Let's
go through a few basics" screen. It will
automatically select personalize option.

Step 16 - Choose your PC name and

personalize the color.

Step 17 - Here you can choose express

settings or choose customize. I will choose
customize to make further customization.

Step 18 - Choose Yes, turn on sharing and

connect to devices.

Step 19 - Help protect and update your PC.

Choose your preferred option and click next.
Step 20 - Send Microsoft info to help make
Windows and apps better. Choose your
preferred options or leave the default
settings. Click next to continue.

Step 21 - Check online for solutions to

problem. Choose your preferred options or
leave the default settings. Click next to
continue.

Step 22 - Sign in to your PC. Here you can

login to your PC using a Microsoft email
account such as your Hotmail account.
*If you do not have a Microsoft account you
can create one by clicking Sign up for a new
email address. Go to Step 23.
*If you don't want to create an email account
and prefer to create a local user name, click
Sign in without a Microsoft account. Go to
step 24.

Step 23 - Sign up for a new email address. If

you want to create a new email account you
need to complete the form below.
Step 24 - Click local account

Step 25 - Here you can choose a local user

name and password. Choose finish to
continue.

Step 26 - At this stage Windows starts to finalize your settings. You will get the
following information screen as the installation moves forward.

Step 27 - As Windows 8 setup progresses you are given a presentation of the new
interface. Its shows you how swiping the edge of the screen brings up the Charm
bar. Using the Charm bar, you can do a search or change your settings. It also
demonstrates how you can hover your mouse on the bottom or top left corner to
access the switch list. This list shows all open applications and allows you to switch
between them.
Step 28 - Soon as the demonstration finishes windows moves into the final stages of
the setup.

Step 29 - Finally the setup process is

finished and you are presented with a
completely new and unfamiliar Metro user
interface. You have your most common
application right in front of you. Clicking on
any tiles will launch that application. At this
point you can start using your computer.
However, it may not be fully configured. You
need to make sure that all the hardware is
detected correctly and the necessary device
drivers are installed. This can be done from
the device manager.

Step 30 - To go to device manager click

search on charm bar on the right. Then type
devmgmt.msc. Click on the devmgmt icon on
the left.

Step31 You will see all your hardware listed

as shown on the image. You need to check if
you have any yellow exclamation marks next
to the name of the devices, similar to "Base
System Device" on the image below. This
indicates that the driver has not been
installed for this device.
At this stage you can install the driver for this
device. To do so, Right Mouse click on Base
System Device -> Update Driver Software...
 Step 32 - You can choose to "Search
automatically for updated driver software" or
"Browse my computer for driver software". If
you have the driver CD or if the driver is on a
USB drive then choose "browse my computer
for driver software". Window 8 will search and
install the driver from the CD or you can locate
the driver manually.
Once you have removed all the yellow
exclamation marks from the device manager
your Windows 8 configuration would be fully complete.

Windows Server 2008 R2 Installation

Windows Server 2008 is a Microsoft server operating system that was
released to the public on February 27, 2008. It most closely resembles Windows
Vista in look and feel. Windows Server 2008 is a robust operating system, including
many highly desirable features for servers that have a demand for maximum uptime
and availability. One new feature, called "self-healing NTFS," allows a sub-process
to repair any detected disk errors as opposed to potentially shutting down a disk to
resolve the error. Additionally, this improved operating system allows the
administrator to install certain hot patches without the need for a system reboot.
Windows Server 2008 also functions as may types of server. It may be used
for a file server, to store company files and data. It may also be used as a Web
server which would host websites for one or many individuals (or companies).
Servers are also useful to share out printers and even applications across a
business or domain. Centralized resources bring greater efficiency to a corporation.

Hardware Requirements

1. Processor — Processor performance depends not only on the clock

frequency of the processor, but also on the number of processor cores and
the size of the processor cache. The following are the processor
requirements:
 Minimum: 1 GHz (for x86 processors) or 1.4 GHz (for x64 processors)
 Recommended: 2 GHz or faster
 2. RAM — The following are the RAM requirements:
 Minimum: 512 MB
 Recommended: 2 GB or more
 Maximum (32-bit systems): 4 GB (for Windows Server 2008 Standard) or 64
GB (for Windows Server 2008 Enterprise or Windows Server 2008
Datacenter)
 Maximum (64-bit systems): 32 GB (for Windows Server 2008 Standard) or 2
terabytes (for Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, Windows Server 2008
Datacenter, or Windows Server® 2008 for Itanium-Based Systems)

3. Disk space requirements —The following are the approximate disk space
requirements for the system partition. Itanium-based and x64-based operating
systems will vary from these estimates. Additional disk space may be
required if you install the system over a network:
 Minimum: 10 GB
 Recommended: 40 GB or more

4. DVD-ROM drive

5. Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution monitor

6. Keyboard and mouse (or other compatible pointing device)

The following are the steps on how to install Windows Server 2008
operating system:
1. Insert the installation media for Windows Server 2008 R2. After the installer
runs, the Install Windows screen appears.
2. Enter language and other preferences. Click Next.

3. Click Install now. The setup begins.

The installer prompts to select an operation system.

4. Select Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Full Installation) and

click Next.
The installer prompts to read the license terms.

5. Read the license terms. If you agree to the license terms, select I accept the
license terms and click Next.
6. The installer asks you which type of installation. For a new installation,
click Custom (advanced).
7. The installer asks for disk location information. Make your selection and
click Next.

8. The installation begins.

9. The installer prompts to change the password. Click OK.

10. Enter a new password, re-enter the password to confirm it, and click the right-
arrow.
11. After you click OK on the confirmation screen, the operating system prepares
your desktop.
 12. The Initial Configuration Tasks window appears by default. Windows Server is
now installed. Windows Server prompts for activation information. Enter
the Product Key and click Next.

INSTALL AND CONFIGURE OF PERIPHERALS DEVICES

In this topic, we cover the installation of peripherals, including monitor,

keyboard, mouse, and so on. Installing peripherals is just about the easiest task you
will tackle when building a computer. The following are the list of devices to be
installed in a computer system:
 Keyboard
 Mouse
 Monitor
 Speakers
 Webcam
 Printer
 Scanner
Note: If your computer doesn’t have an operating system installed yet, you will want
to stop after you install your mouse and keyboard, install your operating system, and
then resume the installation of peripherals.

Installing the Keyboard

Installing a (non-wireless)
keyboard is very straight forward and
easy to do, but first you need to
determine if the keyboard uses a PS/2
or USB connector. The PS/2 connector
for keyboards is round and typically
colored purple to match the connection
on your computer although not all connectors are color coordinated. If your keyboard
has a USB connector, the connector will be flat and rectangular in shape.
Every motherboard on the market that I have seen or heard of still has PS/2
ports; however, the vast majority of newer keyboards you find these days will have
USB connections. Either style will work, but if you don’t want to use up a USB port
for the keyboard, adapters are available that will convert USB keyboard connections
to PS/2.
Once you match your connection type to the port on your computer, you are
ready to go and installing the keyboard is as easy as plugging it into the chosen port.
A word of caution however, do not install your keyboard while your computer is
powered on and do not unplug your keyboard while your computer is running. If you
do either of these things, you run the risk of locking up your computer with possible
data loss. Always be sure to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions before
installing the keyboard on your system.

Installing the Mouse

Installing a mouse is very similar to installing a
keyboard. You will still find mice with either USB or
PS/2 connectivity, although most of the newer mice
will use a USB connection, especially if you are using
a mouse for gaming. Just like the keyboard, you can
also use an adapter to change a USB connection to
PS/2. If you are going to have a lot of USB
peripherals, you may want to consider using
adapters for your mouse and keyboard or perhaps
using a USB hub for some of your peripherals. To complete the installation, simply
plug the mouse into the proper port.
It is important to mention the need to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
Some computer mice require that you install the software before you plug the mouse
in. The instructions or owner’s manual included with the mouse will tell you how to
install it.
Installing the Monitor
Installing a monitor (also known as a “display”) requires a free power outlet for
A/C power and identifying the connection type you will use to connect the monitor to
your graphics card. Both DVI and VGA connections are still very common in today’s
market and many monitors and graphics cards include both types of connections.
For the best picture quality possible, use the digital DVI port on your graphics
card and display if they are available. Most all graphics cards now support multiple
monitors and they typically include the adapters required to change a DVI connection
to VGA for older displays. Once you have the display plugged in, simply connect it to
the appropriate connector on your video card and you are ready to go. Drivers are
not typically required for displays, but once again consult the manufacturer’s
instructions for details.

Installing the Speakers

Installing the speakers can vary greatly
depending on what type of speakers you are using.
If you have a simple set of 2.0 or 2.1 speakers all
you need do is connect the audio cable to the “line-
out” jack of your computer’s sound card, and
connect the other end(s) to the speaker unless they
are already “hardwired” and plug in the power cord.
If you are using a full 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound
system, the connections get a bit more
complicated. Read the instructions that came with
the speakers and sound card for full details on this step. You can also find
USB-powered speakers that have their own sound card built in and need only be
connected to power.

Installing a Webcam
Most webcams are USB-powered and simply
require that you plug them in and install their drivers.
However, some cams require that the drivers be
installed first, so be sure to read the instructions that came with your webcam to
avoid any problems. If you bought a FireWire (a form of connection that is often
faster than USB connections) webcam, ensure that your computer has a FireWire
port because they are not yet all that common.

Installing the Printer

Most printers on the market today will also use a USB connection; however,
parallel port printers are still fairly common. You can also set up a printer over the
network if you have another computer on a local area network (LAN) with a printer
attached and shared.
Typically, you will either be
connecting your printer via USB or
parallel line printer (LPT) ports. Again,
you will want to read the installation
instructions to be sure that you are

INSTALL/UPDATE OPERATING SYSTEM

When new versions of operating systems are launched, such as Microsoft

Windows, Apple OS X / iOS or Android, they are generally accompanied by
improved usability, additional features and an enhanced user experience. However,
cybercriminals quickly find vulnerable areas in the new operating system and
continue to do so for the lifetime of the version. To counter this, the software
companies release regular updates –such as security updates or critical updates
which protect against malware and security exploits.
Other types of updates correct errors or enhance functionality within
the operating system, and are not necessarily security related. They also detect
which of their manufacturers’ other programs you are running on your device and
provide updates to these as well.

The risks
Not keeping your operating system up to date can result in serious issues,
affecting both your device and your own personal security. These include:
 Viruses, spyware and other malware.
 Cybercrime attacks.
 Crashing, freezing and generally poor performance.

Updating your operating system

Windows Computers
To ensure that the latest Windows updates are downloaded and installed
automatically, you should check that your computer is set up as follows:

Windows 8 & 10
 From the Start menu, click 'Control Panel'. Select 'Windows Update', then
click 'Install optional updates'.
 In the left pane, 'click Change settings'. Under Important updates, choose the
option that you want.
 Under 'Recommended updates', select the 'Give me recommended updates
the same way I receive important updates' check box, and then click 'OK.'
 You may be asked for an admin password or to confirm your choice.

Windows 7
 From the Start menu, click ‘Control Panel’. Select ‘System and Security’,
 then click ‘Turn automatic updating on or off’ (under Windows Update).
 Ensure ‘Install updates automatically (recommended)’ is selected.

Windows Vista
 From the Start menu, click ‘Control Panel’.
 Select ‘Security’,
 then click ‘Turn automatic updating on or off’ (under Windows Update).
 Ensure ‘Install updates automatically (recommended)’ is selected.

Windows XP

Microsoft is no longer issuing commercial updates for Windows XP. Read our
advice about replacing Windows XP on this website, or if you are a government user
whose device is covered by an extended agreement, contact your IT department.
When Windows downloads have been downloaded, it will be indicated to you
that they are available. You should re-boot your computer to install them (after which
the display will show how many updates have been applied out of the total) – or if
your computer is locked, it will automatically power down and you will have to start it
up to install the updates. Do not interrupt updates by unplugging or restarting the
computer.

OS X Computers
 Back up your Mac using Time Machine or another backup system.
 If your computer is a MacBook, ensure it is plugged in to mains power.
 Click the Apple icon at the top left of the main menu bar and choose ‘Software
Update’, which will reveal the available updates. You will have to agree to an
Apple user license agreement, and Get Safe Online does recommend that
you read all terms & conditions for your own protection. If other updates are
offered, run these in addition to OS X updates. Alternatively, you may choose
to download Apple's manual installer.
 A progress bar will indicate update status. Do not interrupt updates by
unplugging or restarting the computer.
 You will be asked to enter your Apple ID and password to verify iCloud and
Keychain options.

Mobile Devices
When updates are made available for your mobile device operating system,
they will be downloaded and installed automatically when the device is connected to
the internet.
