The evolution of operating systems (OS) has paralleled advancements in computer technology from the mid-20th
century to today, evolving from simple batch processing systems to sophisticated multi-user, multitasking
environments.

Early Operating Systems (1950s-1960s)

In the 1950s, the first computers operated without an OS, running a single program at a time. Users programmed in
machine language or assembly and directly loaded these programs into the computer's memory. The earliest
operating systems, developed in the 1950s, primarily handled batch processing, automating the execution of jobs
(programs) one after another to optimize computer usage. An early example is the General Motors OS for the IBM
701.

Time-Sharing Systems (1960s-1970s)

The 1960s introduced time-sharing systems, which allowed multiple users to interact with a computer
simultaneously, enhancing efficiency and user experience. The Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS) at MIT
and the Multics (Multiplexed Information and Computing Service) were pioneering systems. Multics, in particular,
introduced many concepts used in modern OS, such as hierarchical file systems and dynamic linking.

Personal Computing Era (1980s)

The 1980s saw the rise of personal computers, necessitating user-friendly operating systems that could support a

kernel.

2. Shortest Job Next (SJN) / Shortest Job First (SJF)


SJF schedules processes by their next CPU burst length, with the shortest burst time going first.

• Disadvantages: Requires accurate knowledge of burst times, which is often impractical, and can cause
starvation of longer processes.

3. Priority Scheduling

This method assigns a priority level to each process, with the CPU allocated to the highest priority process.

• Disadvantages: Can cause starvation for low-priority processes, though aging can help by gradually
increasing their priority.

4. Round Robin (RR)
