Q1 Atempt all qucstions: (3x5-15)

ta) Explain in brief PMDC motor.
b) Explain principle of operation of polyphase induction motor.
{c) Explain principle of operation of a synchronous motor.
d) Draw equivalent circuit of a polyphase induction motor.
le) Draw the equivalent circuit of a synchronous motor and write down the
characteristics of synchronous motor.
UNIT-I
Q2 (a) Explain armature reaction along with suitable diagrams. (9.5)
(b) A shunt generator has an induced voltage of 254V. When the machine is
loaded the terminal voltage drops down to 240V. Neglecting armature
reaction, determine the load current, if the armature resistance is 0.040 and
the field circuit resistance is 242. (5.5)

Q3 (a) Explain speed control method of dc series motora (7)

(b) A250V dc shunt motor on no load runs at 1000 rpm and takes 5A. The field
and armature resistan ces are 2502 and 0.25Q respectively. Calculate the
speed when the motor is loaded such that it takes 41A if the armature
reaction weakens the field by 3%. (5)
4c) Define commutation. (3)
UNIT-II
Q4+ (a) Draw the equivalent circuit and phasor diagram at lagging power factor load
for an actual transformer. (9.5)
(b) Define efficiency of a transformer. (5.5)
If P, and P, be the iron and copper losses of a transformer on full load, find
the ratio of P, and P, such that maximum efficiency occurs at 75% of full
load.

Q5 (a) Discuss open circuit test and short circuit test of a transformner. (9.5)
