1) How did the Enlightenment lead to the French Revolution?
By introducing new ideas to society that then caused the drive for equality and rights,
making the French people revolt against the monarchy and the king.

2) Describe France’s financial shape in 1789.


France had a lot of debt due to the aiding of the Americans during their revolution. The
king took 2,000,000 dollars out of the country to help them, which caused the beginning
of the financial collapse.

3) How did the famine in 1789 affect the price of bread in France?
The famine caused a succession of bad harvests which then raised the cost of flour, the
main ingredient of bread.

4) The Third Estate pays all of the taxes, produces all the
wealth, and fights in all the wars.

5) What was the Tennis Court Oath?


The representatives of the Third Estate in France took an oath during the war to not
separate until France had a written constitution in an open tennis court.

6) What happened on July 14, 1789?


It was the day of the STorming of the Bastille when french people invaded and revolted
against the monarchy. The people stormed the Prison and caused chaos.

7) The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen guaranteed what three rights?
Liberty, property, and security

1) How did the French King and Queen attempt to escape from Paris?

The French king and queen attempted to escape from Paris during the night of June
20-21, 1791 in an event know as The Flight to Varennes. This event destroyed the
credibility of the king as a constitutional monarch and led to the escalation of the crisis
and the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.

2) How did the government work under the new constitution of France?
The Constitution of the new monarchy implemented the idea of separation of powers
between the legislative and executive powers, creating a ore constitution ad limited
government in France.

3) Describe the situation for France in August, 1792.


The revolts of 10 August 1792 was a significant event of the French Revolution. Armed
revolutionaries in Paris in conflict with the French monarchy, stormed the Tuileries
Palace. The conflict led France to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic.

4) What happened to King Louis XVI in January, 1793?


Not wanting to diminish his royal power, Louis XVI was found guilty of treason and
condemned to death. He was guillotined on January 21, 1793.

1) Explain the Reign of Terror in France from 1793-1794.
The Reign of Terror was a period in the French Revolution that consisted of mass
killings and executions by the guillotine, which was led by Robespierre.

2) What happened to Marie Antoinette?


She was executed by the guillotine after her husband, Louis XVI.

3) What factor helped the French army to start having success in the 1790s?
The factor of a new Commander in the army, namely Napoleon Bonaparte.

4) How did the French Revolution end?


Napoleon established a “coup d’etat” and claimed himself to be the First Consul.

1) Why was the guillotine invented?
The guillotine was a device adopted in France during the French Revolution. The
concept was originally proposed by Doctor Joseph-Ignace Guillotin, who argued for a
more painless, humane, and efficient form of execution.
