Instructions

1. This paper consists of sections A, B and C with a total of eleven (11) questions.
2. Answer all questions in section A and B and two (2) questions from section C.
3. Section A carries sixteen (16) marks, section B fifty-four (54) marks and section
C carries thirty (30) marks.
4. Non-programmable calculators and mathematical table may be used.
5. Cellular phones and any unauthorised materials are not allowed in the examination
room.
6. Write your Examination Number on every page of your answer booklet(s)
7. Where necessary the following constants may be used:
(i) Acceleration due to gravity, = 10 /
(ii) Density of water = 1 ⁄ 1000 ⁄
(iii) Velocity of sound in air = 340 /

SECTION A (16 Marks)
Answer all questions in this section
1. For each of the items (i)-(x), choose the correct answer from among the given
alternatives and write its letter beside the item number in the answer booklet(s)
provided.
(i) What would be the reason behind for the door of a physics laboratory to be
designed open outward?
A. To meet the conditions that would be instructed by the laboratory
technician.

(b) Two bulbs A and B are connected in parallel across the battery of e.m.f 6V
with negligible internal resistance as shown in the figure below:

4. (a) Two people X and Y of the same heights are carrying a bucket full of water by
using a uniform wooden rod AB. The position of person X is at the centre of gravity
C of the rod AB and that of person Y is at end B. The bucket is hung between
centre C and end B of the wooden rod as shown in the figure below:

This shows that person X carries more weight of the bucket and the wooden rod AB
than person Y. What would be the appropriate position of person X and that of the

6. (a) Why a dam or pond of water is always constructed with thicker walls at its
bottom than at its top? (2 marks)
(b) With the aid of the diagram, show that the pressure in a liquid does not
depend on the base area of a tank containing the liquid. (2marks)

(c) A hydraulic press has piston 1 and 2 whose cross-sectional areas are 0.02
and 0.1 respectively as shown in the figure below. A car weighing 5000N
sits on a platform mounted on the larger piston. How much force must be
applied to the piston 1 so as to lift the car?

7. (a) Briefly analyze the reason for each of the following:


(i) The cooking utensils and boilers are made of metals such as aluminum
but their handles are made of plastic materials or wood. ( )
(ii) Soft clothes such as blanket and coats always keep our bodies warm
during winter. ( )

(iii) To keep a house warm, it must be made with double walls and double
glass windows that trap air between them. )

(b) Carbon -14 undergoes a beta decay to produce nitrogen (N). Write down the
balanced nuclide equation for this process and hence determine the number
of neutrons of nitrogen formed. ( )

8. (a) Humidity is the amount of water vapour present in the atmosphere. Analyze
four sources from which water vapours are evaporated to the atmosphere.

(b) With the aid of a graph, explain the effect of temperature on the density of
water.

9. (a) In which way does a wire carrying electric current and placed between the
poles of two magnets as shown in the figure below tend to move? (3 marks)
Explain your answer using a scientific rule.

(b) Explain any four (4) causes of power losses in a transformer that can reduce
the efficiency of the transformer. (6 marks)
(c) A 240V mains transformer has 1000 turns in its primary coil and it is
designed to supply electrical energy to a 12V, 24 W lamp. Determine the
efficiency of the transformer if the current drawn from the 240 V mains is
0.125 A. (6 marks)

10. (a) (i) Heat and temperature are closely related but they are actually different. State
three (3) differences between heat and temperature. (2 marks)

(ii) On a particular liquid-in-glass thermometer, the distance between 00c (ice


point) and 1000c (steam point) is 23.3cm. What would be the distance
between the 300c and 600c marks? (2 marks)

(b) (i) Astronomy in general is the study of the universe and all heavenly bodies.
Analyze four (4) bodies that compose the physical universe. (2 marks)

(ii) Earthquake is one of the disasters which brings hazards to people and their
properties. Its causes are both natural and human activities. Briefly explain
two (2) causes of the Earthquake which are natural and one (1) cause which
is due to human activities.

(c) (i) Why does the swimming pool appear much shallower than its actual depth?
( )

(ii) A swimming pool appears to be 1.5m deep. If the refractive index of water
is 4/3, determine the real depth of the pool. ( )

11. (a) A bicycle dynamo and an a.c dynamo both have the same purpose of
generating electricity but they function differently. With the aid of diagram
explain how the bicycle dynamo works. (5marks)
(b) Study carefully the circuits (X) and (Y) shown below, each connects a
battery, a bulb (lamp), a switch and a junction diode in series, then answer a
question that follows:
