1.Sets and Their Representations

a) Write the following sets in roster form:


1. Set of even numbers between 1 and 10.
2. Set of prime numbers less than 20.
b) Express the set of integers between -5 and 5 in set-builder notation.

2. Empty Set

Determine if the following sets are empty:

a) The set of natural numbers less than zero.


b) The set of squares of natural numbers that are less than 1.

3. Subsets and Equal Sets

A) Identify which of the following are subsets:


1. Is {2, 3} a subset of {1,2,3,4}?
2. Is {a, b, c} a subset of {𝑏 , 𝑐 , 𝑑}?
B) Determine if the sets X = {5,6,7} and Y = {7,5,6} are equal.

4. Power Set

Find the power set of each:

a) 𝐴 = {1,2}
b) 𝐵 = {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐}

5. Universal Set

a) If the universal set U = {a, b, c, d, e, f} and C = {b, e} find the complement of C.


b) Given U = {1,2,3,4,5,6} and D = {2,4,6}, what is D’?

6. Union and Intersection of Sets

a) Given the sets P = {1,3,5} and 𝑄 = {3,5,7}:


1. Find 𝑃 ∪ 𝑄.
2. Find 𝑃 ∩ 𝑄.
b) For 𝑅 = {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐} and 𝑆 = {𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑑}, find 𝑅 ∪ 𝑆 and 𝑅 ∩ 𝑆.

7. Difference of Two Sets

a) Given 𝐸 = {2,4,6,8} and 𝐹 = {4,8,10}:


1. Find 𝐸 − 𝐹.
2. Find 𝐹 − 𝐸.
b) If 𝐺 = {𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, 𝑑} and 𝐻 = {𝑐, 𝑑, 𝑒}, what is 𝐺 − 𝐻 and 𝐻 − 𝐺?

8. Complement of a Set

a) Given the universal set 𝑈 = {10,20,30,40,50} and 𝐼 = {20,40}, find the complement
of I.
b) If 𝐽 = {𝑥 ∣ 𝑥 𝑖𝑠 𝑎𝑛 𝑜𝑑𝑑 𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑏𝑒𝑟 𝑙𝑒𝑠𝑠 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛 10} and 𝑈 = {1,2,3, … ,10}, find 𝐽′.

9. Venn Diagrams

a) Draw Venn diagrams for the following:


1. Union and intersection of two sets.
2. The difference of two sets, 𝐴 − 𝐵.
3. The complement of a set.
b) Use a Venn diagram to illustrate (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵)′ and 𝐴′ ∩ 𝐵′ to demonstrate De Morgan's
Laws.

10. De Morgan’s Laws

a) Verify De Morgan’s Laws with the following sets:


1. 𝑋 = {1,2}, 𝑌 = {2,3}, and universal set 𝑈 = {1,2,3,4}.
2. 𝑀 = {𝑎, 𝑒, 𝑖}, 𝑁 = {𝑖, 𝑜, 𝑢}, and 𝑈 = {𝑎, 𝑒, 𝑖, 𝑜, 𝑢}.
b) Show that (𝐴 ∪ 𝐵)′ = 𝐴′ ∩ 𝐵′ and (𝐴 ∩ 𝐵)′ = 𝐴′ ∪ 𝐵′ .

11. In a class of 40 students, 22 play hockey, 26 play basketball, and 14 play both. How many
students do not play either of the games?

12. In a survey of 60 people, 25 liked Tea, 30 liked Coffee, and 10 liked both. How many
people liked only Tea?

13. A survey of 100 students found that 70 students like pizza, 75 like burgers, and 60 like
both. How many students like neither pizza nor burgers?

14. In a group of 50 people, 28 have travelled to Europe, 31 have travelled to Asia, and 10
have travelled to both continents. How many people have not travelled to either continent?

15. In a survey among 140 students, 60 likes to play videogames, 70 likes to play indoor
games, 75 likes to play outdoor games, 30 play indoor and outdoor games, 18 like to play
video games and outdoor games, 42 play video games and indoor games and 8 likes to play
all types of games. Use the Venn diagram to find

(a) Students who play only outdoor games

(b) Students who play video games and indoor games, but not outdoor games
