Introduction to Management
Course Description:
This course prepares students with a comprehensive introduction to effective management
principle sand conduct. It not only aims at providing students with an introduction to
contemporary management concepts and skills, but also encourages students to put these
concepts and skills into practice. Through the course, students are expected to improve their
skills to manage their study and personal lives. In addition, they will be equipped with
management competence and understanding of managerial ethics for their future career.
Course Objectives:
This course will help students to:
Understand the basic intellectual tools and aptitudes they need to meet today`s
business challenges
Investigate the different functions of management, namely planning, organizing,
leading and controlling
Explore the issues such as organization structure and corporate responsibility
Learning Outcomes:
After studying this course, students should be able to:
Develop knowledge of fundamental management concepts and skills
Identify the internal and external factors and forces of the organization that managers
must confront in their daily work
Examine the functions of management: such as planning, organizing, leading,
controlling, and decision making
Identify the key competencies needed to be an effective manager
Demonstrate critical thinking when presented with managerial problems
Understand the importance of social responsibility and managerial ethics in
management operation
Violation of Academic Honesty Policy:
If the instructor receives any of the projects / assignments that are identical or partially
identical (including spreadsheets), such cases will receive a Zero. If the student violates the
Academic Honesty policy for a second time, he/she will receive an “F” grade for the course.
Participation:
Students are required to attend all classes and read all the assigned material in advance of
class (although not necessarily with perfect comprehension). Advanced preparation and class
participation are crucial for proper concept understanding. During discussion sessions, the
instructor generally keeps track of the insightful and useful comments students make
(Irrelevant and Unproductive contribution is not rewarded).
