1. Urn A contains 9 cubes of which 4 are red. Urn B contains 5 cubes of which 2
are red. A cube is drawn at random and in succession from each urn.
a. Find the probability that both cubes are red.
b. Find the probability that only one cube is red.
c. If only one cube is red, find the probability that it came from urn A.
2. A box contains 10 discs, 5 of which are yellow, 3 of which are black and 2 of which
are green. Two discs are selected in succession, with the first disc not replaced
before the second is drawn. Find the probability that
a. the discs are of different color.
b. the discs are of the same color.
c. both were black, given the second disc was black.
3. Tanya has a 90% chance of passing his math test, while Tony has an 85% chance of
passing the same test. If they both sit for the test, find the probability that
a. only one of them passes the test.
b. at least one passes the test.
c. Tanya passes the test given that at least one passed the test.
4. Given that P( A) = 0.6 and P(B) = 0.7 and that A and B are independent, find
! (# ∪ % ).
5. The probability that Rory finishes the race is 0.55 and the probability that Millie
finishes the same race is 0.6. Because of team spirit, there is an 80% chance that
Millie finishes the race if Rory finishes the race. Find the probability that
a. both finish the race.
b. Millie finishes the race if Rory doesn’t finish the race.
c. Rory finishes the race given that Millie finishes.
6. There are 38 books on a shelf. 17 had large print, 12 were novels with large print. 10
were not novels and did not have large print.
a. Show that the events ‘has large print’ and ‘is a novel’ are not independent.
b. Find the probability that a book is either large print or is a novel.
7. I roll two dice and add the scores. Let A be the event “multiple of 5” and B be the
event “greater than or equal to 10”
a. Find !(#|%)
b. Find !(%|#)

8. In a grade level IB students are asked whether they enjoy their first Science subject
(A) and their Mathematics subject (B). 50% enjoy their first Science subject and
65% enjoy their Mathematics subjects. 15% enjoy neither.
a. Draw a Venn diagram and use it to find the probability that a student enjoys both
their first Science and Mathematics subject.
b. Given that a student enjoys Mathematics, find the probability that they enjoy
their first Science subject.
c. Given that a student likes at least one subject, find the probability that they enjoy
both subjects.
9. The following Venn diagram shows some probabilities for events A and B.
a. Write down ! (# ∩ % ) ).
b. Find !(%|#).
c. Find !(#|%′).
10. It is calculated that the probability of rain on July 1st is 0.15. If it rains on any day
the probability it rains on the next day is 0.7. If it doesn’t rain on any day the
probability it rains on the next day is 0.05.
a. Find the probability that it rains on July 2nd.
b. Given that it rains on July 2nd, find the probability that it rained on July 1st.
11. The following Venn diagram shows the number of students who participate in
Athletics (A), Softball (B) and Chess (C).
