The document discusses Problem-Based Learning (PrBL) and its principles, emphasizing collaborative inquiry to solve real-world problems while developing essential skills like problem-solving and communication. It highlights the positive impacts of PrBL on student motivation, responsibility, and oral communicative competence, as well as the role of technology in facilitating these learning experiences. Additionally, it presents examples of PrBL scenarios in science education, demonstrating its effectiveness in engaging students and enhancing their learning outcomes.

A shorter, more focused scientific inquiry might involve
students solving a specific environmental challenge, such as: ❑ Investigating water quality in a local stream ❑ Analyzing pollution levels in a specific ecosystem ❑ Determining the most efficient method of reducing plastic waste in school facilities 5 Principles of PBL (Ali, 2016) 1. It is a power of independent and self-directed learning.
2. Learning happens in a group and teacher is a facilitator.
3. All groups have to participate equally.
4. Students learn about motivation, teamwork, problem-solving,
and engagement with the task.
5. Materials such as data, photograph, and articles, can be used to
solve the problem. 1 4 6

• Promotes self-confidence and motivation
• Reduces students’ nervousness during the learning process • Increases students’ responsibility in learning • Makes students easily learn the material through sharing of ideas • Promotes problem-solving skills • Promotes self-directed learning • Promotes active learning • Makes students explore many learning resources • Makes students develop positive attitude towards learning According to Baresh, Ali, & Darmi (2019)— EFL Students:
• Enhances fluency in communication
• Improves grammar • Increases comprehension • Enhances good pronunciations and intonations • Enhances self-confidence • Increases range of vocabulary According to a study of Lin (2017), it was revealed statistically that PBL students have:
• Improved reading comprehension
• High motivation intensity • Higher desire to learn English and communication According to a study of Markušic and Sabljic (2019), their data revealed that PBL is an acceptable “methodological system” that:
• Interests students in activities
• Develops students’ critical thinking and communication skills • Encourages curiosity and exploratory thinking • Develops students’ love of reading • Develops skills of connecting teaching topics Role of Technology in PBL 1. Online tools can help students to complete their tasks.
2. It allows learners to be actively connected and engaged in
the group task.
3. It allows teachers (as facilitators) to peep into the activities of each
learner so that they can provide feedback at any stage of the PBL activity.
4. Web 2.0 technologies are characterized by collaboration, sharing,
and networking which facilitates and enhances PBL activities.
5. Productivity tools such as those for writing also assist learners
and teachers in accomplishing required tasks and outputs. It is an approach but has evolved as This method is based on John a teaching method that engages Dewey’s principle of learning by learners in a series of planned tasks doing, and Lev Vygotsky’s resulting to the generation of constructivist theory of learning solutions to real-world problems.

In Mr. Darwin's science class, students tackle an eco-friendly school
conservation project. They investigate how the school can reduce paper waste by examining workbook ordering practices.
Students:
❑ Identified the problem of unnecessary workbook purchases
❑ Researched paper conservation strategies ❑ Developed a comprehensive plan to reduce paper consumption ❑ Constructed arguments for implementing their solution Research methodology Skills (Tiwari, Arya, & Bansal, 2017).

The study revealed a significant improvement in
the learners’ overall oral communicative competence of a 12-week intervention lessons using PrBL as a strategy, which was also concluded as an effective and recommended strategy in English language teaching especially for learners with low proficiency. Development of life skills (Wurdinger & Qureshi, 2015).
Their findings revealed that after taking the
PrBL course, there was a significant difference in the mean score for the following life skills: responsibility, problem- solving, self-direction, communication, and creativity skills.
