17 Simple Future

Tense

At the end of this chapter, students will be able to:


€€ identify and use verbs in the simple future tense.
€€ understand when to use the simple future tense.
€€ frame correct sentences in the simple future tense.

Fill in the blanks by using will along with the verbs given in the brackets. One has
been done for you.
1. Tomorrow is my birthday. I will cut the cake. (cut)
2. My mother is ill. My father _______________ her to a doctor. (take)
3. What will you do then?
I _______________ at home. (stay)
4. How will you help your mother?
I _______________ her calm. (keep)
5. Are you coming to school tomorrow?
No, tomorrow _______________ a holiday. (be)
Read the following sentences:
1. Ram will sing in the music class.
2. I shall walk in the morning.
3. Will they come to this place?
In the above sentences, the highlighted verbs talk about actions that will happen sometime
later. These verbs are said to be in the simple future tense.

The simple future tense is used to talk about an action that will take place
in the future. It expresses that the action will happen in the future.

In the simple future tense, we always use—will/shall + verb (in its base form).
A. Fill in the blanks with the simple future form of the verbs given in the brackets.
(Hints: Use will + verb)
1. We _______________ to the market tomorrow. (go)
2. I _______________ my homework in the evening. (do)

Let us look at the following table to study the structure of the simple future tense.
Singular Plural
Ramu will sing. Ramu and I will sing.
I will sing. We will sing.
I shall sing. We shall sing.
You will sing. You will sing.
He will sing.
Ram and Geeta will sing.
She will sing.
They will sing.
It will sing.

€€ Shall is mostly used with I and we. It is also used to show politeness.
€€ The use of shall has declined lately. The use of shall is now limited only to make an
offer or a suggestion.

B. Fill in the blanks by choosing the most suitable option given in the brackets.
1. The train is standing on the platform. Passengers _______________ out of the

2. The lion is chasing a deer. It _______________ the deer. (will leave/will catch)

Read the following sentences:
1. It is raining. I will not play outside.

In the above sentences, the highlighted phrase (will not) tells us about the inability to do
something in future.

We use will not when we express the inability to do something at a


particular time in future. Will not can also be written as won’t.

C. Fill in the blanks with will/will not to complete the following sentences.
