The period from the late 1930s to the middle 1940s is known as the Golden Age of comic books. The modern
comic book came about in the early 1930s in the United States as a giveaway premium to promote the sales of a whole
range of household products such as cereal and cleansers. The comic books, which were printed in bright colors to
attract the attention of potential customers, proved so popular that some publishers decided to produce comic books that
would come out on a monthly basis and would sell for a dime each. Though comic strips had been reproduced in
publications prior to this time, the Famous Funnies comic book, which was started in 1934, marked the first occasion
that a serialized book of comics was attempted.
Early comic books reprinted already existing comic strips and comics based on known characters; however,
publishers soon began introducing original characters developed specially for comic books. Superman was introduced
in Action Comics in 1938, and Batman was introduced a year later. The tremendous success of these superhero comic
books led to the development of numerous comic books on a variety of topics, though superhero comic books
predominated. Astonishingly, by 1945 approximately 160 different comic books were being published in the United
States each month, and 90 percent of U.S children were said to read comic books on a regular basis.

sunshine in but stop the earth’s heat from getting out. It works like a greenhouse, that’s why we call it the
Greenhouse Effect. (20) of this effect, the earth is getting warmer all the time. This (21) in temperature
will cause big changes to the world's climate. The sea level will rise, the ice covering the poles will melt and cause
the sea level to rise. The second problem is the loss of the ozone layer. Certain chemicals float up to the sky and
react with the ozone layer, and they make holes in it. Because of these holes the ultraviolet rays can shine directly to
the earth. (22) people are now starting to suffer from skin cancer. The sulfurous smoke from factories and
power stations mixes with rain clouds and gets blown by the wind and then falls as acid rain (23) destroys lakes

The word Olympic comes from the name of the town Olympia in Greece, where the ancient Olympic games
were always held. The first recorded Olympic Games were held in 776 B.C.; the Games took place every fourth
year after that date until they were abolished by a Roman emperor in
A.D. 394.
It was not until 1875, when archaeologists discovered the ruins of the Olympic Stadium in Greece, that interest
in the Games was renewed. Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French scholar and educator,
proposed that the Games should be revived as an international competition to encourage both sport and world peace.
The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896. Like their classical predecessors, the athletes
were men only; women were admitted in to Games in 1900. Since that time, the Games have been held at four-year
intervals as in ancient Greece. However, since de Coubertin’s dreams of world peace have not been realized, the two
World Wars prevented those of 1916, 1940, and 1944 from being held.
The Olympic Games have been confined to amateur athletes despite a few recent exceptions. There are pressures
on the Olympic authorities to admit other professionals to the Games. Such a step would damage the entire concept
of the Olympics. The following words appear on the scoreboard at every Olympic opening: “The most important
thing is not to win but to take part.” In contrast, the aim of every professional is to win.

At the age of sixty-five, Laura Ingalls Wilder began writing a series of novels for young people based on her
early experiences on the American frontier. Born in the state of Wiscosin in 1867, she and her family were rugged
pioneers. Seeking better farm land, they went by covered wagon to Missouri in 1869, then on to Kansas the next year,
returning to Wisconsin in 1871, and travelling on to Minnesota and Lowa before settling permanently in South Dakota
in 1879. Because of this continuing moving, Wilder's early education took place sporadically in a succession of one-
room schools. From age thirteen to sixteen she attended school more regularly although she never graduated.
At the age of eighteen, she married Almanzo James Wilder. They bought a small farm in the Ozarks, where they
remained for the rest of their lives. Their only daughter, Rose, who had become a nationally known journalist,
encouraged her mother to write. Serving as agent and editor, Rose negotiated with Harper's to publish her mother's first
book, Little House on the Big Woods. Seven more books followed, each chronicling her early life on the plains. Written
from the perspective of a child, they have remained popular with young readers from many nations. Twenty years after

much cheaper than computers. And books do not need a power source. You can read a book for as long as you want and
wherever you want. You never have to worry about losing power. Also, many people feel more comfortable reading
words in a book than reading words on a computer screen because it is less tiring to the eyes.
Will books in the future be exactly the same as the books you can buy today? The answer to that is no. In the future,
you may only need to buy one book. With this one book, you will be able to read novels, plays, and newspapers. It will
look like today's books, but it will be electronic.
One of the people working on the book of the future is Professor Joseph Jacobson from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology. Professor Jacobson's electronic book will have a small button on the side. When you press the button,
words will instantly appear on the page. When you want to read a different story, you can push the button again and a
new story will quickly appear.

Read the passage and choose the best option A, B, C or D to answer the question:
Humans have struggled against weeds since the beginning of agriculture. The global need for weed control has been
answered mainly by the chemical industry. Its herbicides are effective and sometimes necessary, but some pose serious
problems, particularly if misused. Toxic compounds threaten animals and public health when they are present in food
plant, ground water, and drinking water. They also harm workers who apply them.
In recent years the chemical industry has introduced several herbicides that are more ecologically sound. Yet new
chemicals alone cannot solve the world's weed problems. Therefore, scientists are exploring the innate weed-killing
powers of living organisms, primarily insects and microorganisms.
The biological agents now in use are harmless to humans, environmentally friendly, and offer the benefit of specificity.
They can be chosen for their ability to attack selected targets and leave crops and other plants untouched. In contrast,
some of the most effective chemicals kill almost all the plants they come in contact with, sparing only those that are
naturally resistant to those that have been genetically modified for resistance. Furthermore, a number of biological
agents can be administered only once, after that no added applications are needed. Chemicals, typically, must be used
several times per growing season.
