MATH 204: Integral Calculus

Tutorial 4(27-02-2024)

Question 1.
Test 1: 08th March 2024, Time: 1500hrs-1550 hrs, VENUE: BLOCK 124/005-
006

(a) Use the slicing method to find the volume of the solid of revolution bounded by the
graphs of f (x) = x2 − 4x + 5, x = 1, and x = 4 and rotated about the x-axis.
(b) Find the volume of the solid obtained by rotating the region enclosed by the curves

x = y and x = y about the line x = −1.

(c) The region bounded by the curve y = x, the x-axis, and the line x = 4 is revolved
about the x-axis to generate a solid. Find the volume of the solid by the shell method.
(d) Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region between the x-axis and
the curve y = x2 − 2x about;
(i) the x-axis (ii) the line x = 2.
(e) Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region bounded by the curve
y = sin x and the lines x = 0, x = π, and y = 2 about the line y = 2.
(f) Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving about the x-axis the region
π π
bounded by y = 2 tan x, y = 0, x = − , and x = . (The region lies in the first
4 4
and third quadrants.)
(g) A solid is generated by revolving about the x-axis the region bounded by the graph
of the positive continuous function y = f (x), the x-axis, and the lines x = 0 and x = a.
Its volume, for all a > 0, is a2 + a. Find f (x).

(h) Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region bounded by y = x
and the lines y = 1, x = 4 about the line y = 1.

Question 2.
Use the Shell Method:
(a) Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region between the x-axis and
the curve y = x2 − 2x about;
(i) the x-axis (ii) the line x = 2.
(b) Find the volume of the solid obtained by revolving around the y-axis the plane area
between the graph of y = 1 − x2 and the x-axis.
