SW2 Final 2019b

The document outlines the final exam for ME 593 Projects in Mechanical Design at Jordan University of Science and Technology, focusing on various mechanical simulations and analyses. It includes four questions requiring static simulations, motion analysis, thermal simulations, and structural analysis with specific tasks and requirements for each. Students are expected to generate reports and plots based on their simulations, adhering to guidelines for simplification and material specifications.

ME 593 Projects in Mechanical Design Final Exam Second Semester 2019/2020

Q.1) (mark:24/66) The mechanism is subjected to a 500 lb.in torque acting at the square end face (blue)
of part ②, while the bottom surface of part ① is fixed as shown. Draw and assemble the parts in the
position shown, then define a static simulation study in the position shown, then add simulation bolt
connections. Don’t run study. The material for all parts including bolts is Alloy Steel. All the parts are
touching. Hint: define exploded view to reach inner faces.

Q.2) (mark:12/66) For the same assembly of Q.1, go to

motion study and define motion analysis. Define a
starting point form the position shown, then add a motor
with speed of 36 rpm at part ② as shown. Add two
springs as shown. Then starting from the postion shown,
define and run a 5 second mechanism analysis including
the motor and gravity. Get result plot for magnitude of
motor power consumption vs. time.
Define and run a 0.1 second simulaion motion study for
part ③ and get stress distribution.

Q.3) (mark:13/66) Save a copy of part ③, start steady

state thermal simulation study then place a heat source of
magnitude Q=0.5 BTU/s at the pins as shown and insulated
boundary condition at the end surface of the four holes,
add a convection state (h=0.001 BTU/(s.in2. °F), bulk temp.
68°F) at all the remaining surfaces. Run a thermal analysis
and get temperature plot, then define a static analysis due
to temperature, run and get fringe plot for stress von
mises distribution. Generate a WORD report for stress. The
reference temperature is 68°F.

Simplify the model using suitable idealizations.

Q.4) (mark:17/66) For the structure shown, knowing that the material is Alloy steel and there is a pin
at A and a roller at B and the cross section is a standard C Channel 3x5 inch. Run a static analysis and
show in a WORD report the following:

 stress plot (axial & bending)

 resultant displacement plot.
 Shear diagram
 Moment diagram
 Run frequency study and
get first 5 natural
frequencies.

(Note: 1 ft=12 inch,

1 kip=1000 lbf)

Simplify the model using suitable idealizations.
