use). Theory:
The physical components those we can see and touch are called HARDWARE (h/w). A set of
programs those are used to make work the hardware is called SOFTWARE(s/w).
Some of the major components of the computer are SYSTEM UNIT (Cabinet), KEYBOARD,
MOUSE, MONITOR, SPEAKERS, etc. Pretty much everything attached to the computer
system unit (Cabinet) is generally as a PERIPHERAL DEVICE. Peripheral devices perform
what are called INPUT/OUTPUT (I/O) functions for the system unit.
1) Identify the type of the cabinet (desktop/flat bedded and Tower type).
2) Disconnect all the cables connected at the back panel of the cabinet or
Motherboard back panel
3) Open the cabinets cover using a proper screw driver. Keep all the nuts and bolts in the
safe place to re-fix them later.

Memory (RAM) The system memory is often called RAM (for random access
memory). This is the primary memory, which holds all the
programs and data the processor is using at a given time.
Case/chassis The case is the frame or chassis that houses the motherboard, power
supply, disk drives, adapter cards, and any other physical
components in the system.
Power supply The power supply is what feeds electrical power to every single part
in the PC.
Hard drive The hard disk is the primary archival storage memory for the
system.
Mouse Although many types of pointing devices are on the market today,
the first and most popular device for this purpose is the mouse.
The mouse and other pointing devices are covered in detail in
Chapter 18.
Video card The video card controls the information you see on the monitor
5) Rearrange the components as it was and re-fix the cabinet with all removed screws
properly.
6) Connect all the cables those are disconnected at the backside of the cabinet.
Result: The learner will be able to study the given computer system and identify
different components inside the cabinet.
4. Disassembling a PC?
Disassembling a PC means disconnecting the different components of a PC.
Among these computer parts, the most failure-prone parts are memory, power
unit, hard drive, video card and CD/DVD drive.
Software problem
Other than hardware defect, a computer may stop working because of software
problem aswell. In fact, most of the problems of a computer come due to
software problem and systemconfigurations. Software includes both the
operating system and application programs. A problem related with
operating system may stop the entire system, in this case you shouldrepair it
using boot disk or reinstall from scratch. Whereas the fault caused by
applicationprogram can be corrected by using software repair programs such
as registry cleaner orreinstalling it again.
Some of the reasons for software problems include
- Corrupted or missing system files
- Virus attack
- Invalid hardware or incompatible driver
- Corrupted registry
- Improper program installation/removal
Step two:
Troubleshooting the problem
The second step in basic computer troubleshooting is dealing with the
identified problem. How are you going to solve the problem? What do you
need to resolve it? To come down to the best solution, you must ask these
kinds of questions and answer accordingly.
Hardware troubleshooting
If it is a hardware problem, you either repair or replace it with new one.
Actually, not all parts of a computer are repairable. Even if it is maintainable,
in most cases replacing the defective part with a new one is cheaper than
repair it.
If power is obviously flowing to the computer system and its peripherals, there may be
a component issue. When you first turn on the computer, do you hear or see anything
out of the ordinary? Many times the computer’s Power-On Self-Test (POST) will let you
know what’s going on with the machine.

Beep Codes
If you hear any beeps when your computer turns on, they can help you
troubleshoot common PC hardware problems. Here’s a list of beep codes (hint:
remember these if you’re taking the COMPTIA A+ exam).
No beep but the system turns on and runs fine - Under normal
circumstances, most computer systems will beep one short beep when
turned on. If yours doesn’t, your “beeper” may have died out.
No beep - The power supply is not plugged in or turned on. Or, the power
supply is completely dead.
Steady, short beeps - The power supply may be bad or the voltages might
be wrong. A replacement would usually be necessary.
Steady, long beeps - The power supply has gone bad.
Long, continuous beep - Your Random Access Memory (RAM) sticks may have
gone bad. If there is more than one stick installed, try taking one out to see if
the computer boots. If it does not, try the same thing with the other stick. This
will tell you which stick has gone bad and you can replace or upgrade
accordingly. If there is only one stick installed, you will need to replace or
upgrade it to fix the problem.
One long, two short beeps - There has been a video card failure. Your first
action is to try reseating the video card. This often solves the problem when the
computer system is connected to projectors because the VGA/DVI/Video cable
gets moved so often that the card can be slowly unplugged. If reseating doesn’t
work, replace the video card.
Client / server LANs: This type of local area network consists of several
devices, which are also known as clients which are connected to a central
server. This server manages all the file storage as well as functions like printer
access and the network traffic. The devices or clients can be a computer of any
sort - in fact anything that runs applications. Connections to the server can use
a wired format like Ethernet or a wireless connection. This type of LAN is the
type used for business applications where heavy workloads are anticipated.
Peer to peer LANs: The peer to peer local area networks do not have a
central server. Devices access the network as required, and in a way where they
manage the access that is needed. Virtually allcomputers and other devices that
are designed for accessing a local area network can manage their access
suitably. In view of the way they operate, these local area networks cannot
handles the heavy usage and traffic that one using a server can. However they
are much better for low usage LANs as they do not require a dedicated server.
The devices share resources and data through a wired or wireless connection
to a router. Most home networks are peer to peer networks as the usage is low.
Home LANs of this type are ideal for enabling PCs, laptops, tablets, smart
phones, printers, smart televisions and much more to share resources and to
provide access to the Internet.
Although there are two different types of local area network, both have the
similarity that they operate over a relatively local or small area.
Basics of Wi-Fi:
Wi-Fi is a technology for wireless local area networking with devices based on
the IEEE 802.11 standards.
Devices that can use Wi-Fi technology include personal computers, video-game
consoles, smart phones and tablets, digital cameras, smart TVs, digital audio
players and modern printers. Wi-Fi compatible devices can connect to the
Internet via a WLAN and a wireless access point. Such an access point (or
hotspot) has a range of about 20 meters (66 feet) indoors and a greater range
outdoors. Hotspot coverage can be as small as a single room with walls that
block radio waves, or as large as many square kilometers achieved by using
multiple overlapping access points
Wi-Fi most commonly uses the 2.4 gigahertz (12 cm) UHF and 5.8 gigahertz (5
cm) SHF ISM radio bands. Anyone within range with a wireless network

interface controller can attempt to access the network; because of this, Wi-Fi is more
vulnerable to attack (called eavesdropping) than wired networks.
Wi-Fi also allows communications directly from one computer to another
without an access pointintermediary. This is called ad hoc Wi-Fi transmission.
Frame Control: Indicates the type of frame (control, management, or data) and
provides control information. Control information includes whether the frame is
to or from a DS, fragmentation information, and privacy information.
Duration/Connection ID: If used as a duration field, indicates the time (in
microseconds) the channel will be allocated for successful transmission of a MAC
frame. In some control frames, this field contains an association, or connection,
identifier.
Addresses: The number and meaning of the 48-bit address fields depend on
context. The transmitter address and receiver address are the MAC addresses of
stations joined to the BSS that are transmitting and receiving frames over the
wireless LAN. The service set ID (SSID) identifies the wireless LAN over which a
frame is transmitted.
For an IBSS, the SSID is a random number generated at the time the network is
formed. For a wireless LAN that is part of a larger configuration the SSID
identifies the BSS over which the frame is trans- mitted; specifically, the SSID is
the MAC-level address of the AP for this BSS.
Finally the source address and destination address are the MAC addresses of
stations, wireless or otherwise, that are the ultimate source and destination of
this frame. The source address may be identical to the transmitter address and
the destination address may be identical to the receiver address.
Sequence Control: Contains a 4-bit fragment number subfield, used for
fragmentation and reassembly, and a 12-bit sequence number used to number
frames sent between a given transmitter and receiver.
Frame Body: Contains an MSDU or a fragment of an MSDU. The MSDU is a LLC
protocol data unit or MAC control information. Frame Check Sequence: A 32-bit
cyclic redundancy check.

Whether you need to update your BIOS or sweep it clean of systematic bugs, knowing how
to enter BIOS is essential for PC users. In order to access BIOS on a Windows PC, you
must press your BIOS key set by your manufacturer which could be F10, F2, F12, F1, or
DEL.
If your PC goes through its power on self-test startup too quickly, you can also enter BIOS
through Windows 10’s advanced start menu recovery settings.
One thing PC users love most about Windows is how many options you can configure
directly within your selected system.
What is BIOS?
As your PC’s most important startup program, BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, is
the built-in core processor software responsible for booting up your system.
Typically embedded into your computer as a motherboard chip, the BIOS functions as a
catalyst for PC functionality action.
Programmed on an erasable, programmable, read-only memory (EPROM) chip, BIOS is
stored on this memory chip which retains data when the power source is switched off.
When the PC is powered back on, BIOS retrieves that same stored data.
2. CMOS setup
Your PC stores all low-level settings like system time and hardware configuration within its
CMOS.
This means that every change you make to your BIOS structure is saved on this special
memory chip called the Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor, or CMOS.
The CMOS setup is responsible for setting your password, time, and date.
3. Bootstrap loader
The program that lives within your computer’s EPROM or ROM, the bootstrap loader is
tasked with reading your PC’s hard drive boot sector to move along the complete
operating system load.
When you restart your PC, the bootstrap loader activates the POST, then loads Windows 10
into memory. Newer PCs have replaced the bootstrap loader with an EFI, or Extensible
Firmware Interface.
4. BIOS drivers
BIOS drivers are the many programs stored in your computer’s many memory chips. These
low-level drivers are used to boot your system and prompt basic operational controls
on your PC.

1. How to search the Web
There are many different search engines you can use, but some of the most popular
include Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. To perform a search, you'll need to navigate to a
search engine in your web browser, type one or more keywords—also known
as search terms—then press Enter on your keyboard. In this example, we'll search
for recipes.
After you run a search, you'll see a list of relevant websites that match your search
terms. These are commonly known as search results. If you see a site that looks
interesting, you can click a link to open it. If the site doesn't have what you need,
you can simply return to the results page to look for more options.
