1) Aim: Identification of the peripherals of a computer, Components of CPU and

Their Functions:

Equipment: A personal computer (preferably not in

use). Theory:

A computer is an electronic device that is designed to accept data, instructions as

INPUT; store and process the data & instructions; finally produce the information or result
as an OUTPUT.

The physical components those we can see and touch are called HARDWARE (h/w). A set of
programs those are used to make work the hardware is called SOFTWARE(s/w).

Some of the major components of the computer are SYSTEM UNIT (Cabinet), KEYBOARD,
MOUSE, MONITOR, SPEAKERS, etc. Pretty much everything attached to the computer
system unit (Cabinet) is generally as a PERIPHERAL DEVICE. Peripheral devices perform
what are called INPUT/OUTPUT (I/O) functions for the system unit.

ACTIVITY: Complete the following jobs:

1) Identify the type of the cabinet (desktop/flat bedded and Tower type).

Figures: Front views of cabinets

2) Disconnect all the cables connected at the back panel of the cabinet or
Motherboard back panel

3) Open the cabinets cover using a proper screw driver. Keep all the nuts and bolts in the
safe place to re-fix them later.

4) Locate the following components inside your computer cabinet:

Motherboard The motherboard is the core of the system. It really is the PC;
everything else is connected to it, and it controls everything in the
system.

Processor The processor is often thought of as the "engine" of the computer.

It's also called the CPU (central processing unit).

Memory (RAM) The system memory is often called RAM (for random access
memory). This is the primary memory, which holds all the
programs and data the processor is using at a given time.

Case/chassis The case is the frame or chassis that houses the motherboard, power
supply, disk drives, adapter cards, and any other physical
components in the system.

Power supply The power supply is what feeds electrical power to every single part
in the PC.

Floppy drive The floppy drive is a simple, inexpensive, low-capacity, removable-

media, magnetic storage device.

Hard drive The hard disk is the primary archival storage memory for the
system.

CD-ROM/DVD-ROM CD-ROM (compact disc read-only) and DVD-ROM (digital versatile

disc read-only) drives are relatively high-capacity, removable
media, and optical drives.

Keyboard The keyboard is the primary input device on a PC that is used by a

human to communicate with and control a system.

Mouse Although many types of pointing devices are on the market today,
the first and most popular device for this purpose is the mouse.
The mouse and other pointing devices are covered in detail in
Chapter 18.

Video card The video card controls the information you see on the monitor

Monitor Monitors is an output device

Sound card It enables the PC to generate complex sounds.

Modem Most prebuilt PCs ship with a modem (generally an internal

modem).

5) Rearrange the components as it was and re-fix the cabinet with all removed screws
properly.

6) Connect all the cables those are disconnected at the backside of the cabinet.

Result: The learner will be able to study the given computer system and identify
different components inside the cabinet.

2) Assembling and disassembling the system hardware components of

personalcomputer:-
 Assemble a Computer
The assembling of the computer system is exactly the opposite of
disassembling operation. Before starting assembling the computer system, make
sure you have the screws and a screwdriver for those.
Step 1: Mount the Processor
The first step for assembling the computer system starts with mounting the
processor on the processor socket of the motherboard. To mount the process, you
don't need to apply any force. The special ZIF (zero insertion force) sockets are
usually used to prevent any damage to the processor pins. Once the processor is
mounted, the heat sink will be attached on top of the processor. The CPU fan is
alsoattached on top of the heat sink.
Step 2: Fix the Motherboard in the Tower Case
Now the motherboard is to be fixed vertically in the tower case and the
screws are fixed from behind of the motherboard.
Step 3: Connect the Power Supply
Now line up the power supply at the top back end of the cabinet and screw
it. The power connectors for motherboard power supply and CPU fan power
supply are to be connected. If the cabinet cooling FAN is required then it is to be
screwed at the back end grill of the cabinet and its power connector is to be
connected from SMPS.
Step 4: Install the Drives
Install the CD/DVD drives at the top front end of the cabinet and screw it.
Install the Hard disk drive and floppy disk drive below CD/DVD drive and screw
it. Make sure once screwed there is no vibration in either of the CD/DVD, hard
disk or floppy disk drives.
Step 5: Connect Cables
Now select the appropriate data cable and connect one end of the cable to
its drive socket and another end at its appropriate connector on the
motherboard. For SATA hard disk drive or CD/DVDdrives use SATA cable and
its power cable, else use IDE data cable. Do the proper jumper settings as per the
usage requirement.
Step 6: Mount the Memory Modules
It is time now to mount the memory modules on the motherboard by
aligning the RAM to its socket on the motherboard and press it downward. Make
sure the side tab are fixed into the RAM notch. If not, you may still have to press a
bit.

DEPT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
RAICHUR UNIVERSITY

Step 7: Install the Internal Cards

Install the internal cards to its socket and attach the cables or power cable
to it. The selection of right socket or slot is required as per the type of socket.
Step 8: Cover the Tower
Cover the tower by placing it and pressing towards front side and screw it.
Step 9: Connect the External Devices and Power
Connect the external devices with CPU at its appropriate socket. It includes
mouse and keyboard at
PS2 or USB connectors. Monitor at the video output socket. Connect the power
cable to the back of towerin SMPS. Plug in the power cable to the electric board.

4. Disassembling a PC?
Disassembling a PC means disconnecting the different components of a PC.

 Steps for disassembling a PC

Generally, people want to know both assemble and disassemble steps of a
computer. Therefore I am sharing my ideas to help you to assemble and
disassemble a computer systemtep 1. Unplugged the AC power supply to the PC
from the wall socket
This one is the first step to begin a PC disassemble process. Always
remember first disconnect all the power supply connected to your computer
system before starting to remove parts.
Step 2. Remove the case covering
Loose the screws and remove the case covering to access the inside parts of
the CPU cabinet case.
Step 3. Unplugged bus cables and ATX power cables
Disconnect all the cables one by one inside the CPU case. First, disconnect
ATX power cables from the motherboard. After that, disconnect power supply
cables, bus cables from the HDD/SSD, and motherboard.
Step 4. Remove adapter cards if any
If any adapter is connected then, disconnect the card from the motherboard.
Step 5. Remove the processor and the heat sink and fan
Now its time to remove the heat sink from the motherboard. Generally, the
CPU fan and the heat sink attach together. If it is separated in that case, you need
to remove the fan first after that, you can remove the CPU heat sink.
In the final step, unlock the processor socket and remove the processor from the
motherboard carefully.

BCA 1ST SEMISTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LAB(CACO1P)

DEPT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
RAICHUR UNIVERSITY
Step 6. Remove hard disk and CD/ DVD drives
Its time to remove the other parts of the computer system. Remove the Hard disk
drive or SSD from the motherboard. You can also remove the CD/DVD drive from the
CPU case.
Sometimes, to remove CD/DVD drive from the CPU case, you need to remove the
front cover of the CPUcabinet case first. After that, you can remove the ROM drives.

Step 7. Remove memory modules

In this process, you do remove the RAM from the motherboard. First, unlock the
RAM from bothends and pull the RAM carefully.
Step 8. Remove the Power Supply Unit (PSU)
Already you know, SMPS supplies power to the various parts of the computer
system. Here you need to remove the SMPS from the CPU cabinet case.
Step 9. Remove the motherboard
The final step of the PC disassemble process is this one. Carefully remove
the motherboard from the CPU cabinet case.
3) Basic computer Hardware Trouble Shooting:-
Basic computer troubleshooting involves diagnosing, identifying and solving
computer systems problems. Like any electronics equipment, a computer
may stop working or unable to start at all because of several reasons. The
reasons could be either software or hardware failure or both.
The good thing is that every PC problem has a solution. You can solve it if
you follow computer troubleshooting techniques.
In this article, we will discuss about the tools and the knowledge we need
to have in order to troubleshoot a computer. Actually, you do not have to
be a ‘techie’ person to troubleshoot your own computer. Understanding the
basics of how computer parts work together, simple logical analysis
method, common sense, knowing basic computer troubleshooting tips and
handy tools are all you need to repair a computer.

 Steps in Basic computer troubleshooting:

 Step one:
Determine the area of the problem
Before going to the repairing process, you should identify and isolate the
type of difficulty your PC encountered. This is the first step in basic
computer troubleshooting.
Generally, computer problems fall into two main areas: hardware and
software. Your computer fails to work due to hardware or software failure.

Is it hardware or software problem or combination? You must answer

this question, because the troubleshooting methods and tools you
implement for both breakdowns are different.

DEPT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
RAICHUR UNIVERSITY
Hardware problem
Hardware problem occurs when one of the key parts of a computer is unable to
work properly. The key components of a computer that are required to run a
computer include Motherboard, CPU, Memory, Power unit, Hard Drive, Sound
and Video Cards, CD/DVD Drive (optional), Floppy Drive (optional), Monitor, and
Keyboard.

Among these computer parts, the most failure-prone parts are memory, power
unit, hard drive, video card and CD/DVD drive.
Software problem
Other than hardware defect, a computer may stop working because of software
problem aswell. In fact, most of the problems of a computer come due to
software problem and systemconfigurations. Software includes both the
operating system and application programs. A problem related with
operating system may stop the entire system, in this case you shouldrepair it
using boot disk or reinstall from scratch. Whereas the fault caused by
applicationprogram can be corrected by using software repair programs such
as registry cleaner orreinstalling it again.
Some of the reasons for software problems include
- Corrupted or missing system files
- Virus attack
- Invalid hardware or incompatible driver
- Corrupted registry
- Improper program installation/removal
 Step two:
Troubleshooting the problem
The second step in basic computer troubleshooting is dealing with the
identified problem. How are you going to solve the problem? What do you
need to resolve it? To come down to the best solution, you must ask these
kinds of questions and answer accordingly.
Hardware troubleshooting
If it is a hardware problem, you either repair or replace it with new one.
Actually, not all parts of a computer are repairable. Even if it is maintainable,
in most cases replacing the defective part with a new one is cheaper than
repair it.

Problem #: Your Computer Turns On, But Still Doesn’t Work

If power is obviously flowing to the computer system and its peripherals, there may be
a component issue. When you first turn on the computer, do you hear or see anything
out of the ordinary? Many times the computer’s Power-On Self-Test (POST) will let you
know what’s going on with the machine.

Beep Codes

If you hear any beeps when your computer turns on, they can help you
troubleshoot common PC hardware problems. Here’s a list of beep codes (hint:
remember these if you’re taking the COMPTIA A+ exam).

 No beep but the system turns on and runs fine - Under normal
circumstances, most computer systems will beep one short beep when
turned on. If yours doesn’t, your “beeper” may have died out.
 No beep - The power supply is not plugged in or turned on. Or, the power
supply is completely dead.
 Steady, short beeps - The power supply may be bad or the voltages might
be wrong. A replacement would usually be necessary.
 Steady, long beeps - The power supply has gone bad.
 Long, continuous beep - Your Random Access Memory (RAM) sticks may have
gone bad. If there is more than one stick installed, try taking one out to see if
the computer boots. If it does not, try the same thing with the other stick. This
will tell you which stick has gone bad and you can replace or upgrade
accordingly. If there is only one stick installed, you will need to replace or
upgrade it to fix the problem.
 One long, two short beeps - There has been a video card failure. Your first
action is to try reseating the video card. This often solves the problem when the
computer system is connected to projectors because the VGA/DVI/Video cable
gets moved so often that the card can be slowly unplugged. If reseating doesn’t
work, replace the video card.

Some of the common solutions are to:

 Make sure your computer isn’t overheating. If it is, close unused

applications, checks the fan is working properly, and conduct a good dusting
after the computer is turned off before trying other solutions for an
overheating PC.
 Boot into Safe Mode before trying to fix a problem.
 Test your hardware components and check the computer’s memory for errors.
 Check for incorrectly installed or buggy drivers. Install updated drivers.
 Scan for Malware that is causing the crash.
 Reset or reinstall Windows.
Use System Restore to get your computer back to its previous state. If it works, you
probably have a software problem on your hands.

4) LAN and WiFi Basics:-
 Basics of LAN :
A local area network (LAN) is a collection of devices connected together in one
physical location, such as a building, office, or home. A LAN can be small or
large, ranging from a home network with one user to an enterprise network
with thousands of users and devices in an office or school.
There are two main types of local area network:

Client / server LANs: This type of local area network consists of several
devices, which are also known as clients which are connected to a central
server. This server manages all the file storage as well as functions like printer
access and the network traffic. The devices or clients can be a computer of any
sort - in fact anything that runs applications. Connections to the server can use
a wired format like Ethernet or a wireless connection. This type of LAN is the
type used for business applications where heavy workloads are anticipated.

Peer to peer LANs: The peer to peer local area networks do not have a
central server. Devices access the network as required, and in a way where they
manage the access that is needed. Virtually allcomputers and other devices that
are designed for accessing a local area network can manage their access
suitably. In view of the way they operate, these local area networks cannot
handles the heavy usage and traffic that one using a server can. However they
are much better for low usage LANs as they do not require a dedicated server.
The devices share resources and data through a wired or wireless connection
to a router. Most home networks are peer to peer networks as the usage is low.
Home LANs of this type are ideal for enabling PCs, laptops, tablets, smart
phones, printers, smart televisions and much more to share resources and to
provide access to the Internet.
Although there are two different types of local area network, both have the
similarity that they operate over a relatively local or small area.

 Basics of Wi-Fi:
 Wi-Fi is a technology for wireless local area networking with devices based on
the IEEE 802.11 standards.
 Devices that can use Wi-Fi technology include personal computers, video-game
consoles, smart phones and tablets, digital cameras, smart TVs, digital audio
players and modern printers. Wi-Fi compatible devices can connect to the
Internet via a WLAN and a wireless access point. Such an access point (or
hotspot) has a range of about 20 meters (66 feet) indoors and a greater range
outdoors. Hotspot coverage can be as small as a single room with walls that
block radio waves, or as large as many square kilometers achieved by using
multiple overlapping access points
 Wi-Fi most commonly uses the 2.4 gigahertz (12 cm) UHF and 5.8 gigahertz (5
cm) SHF ISM radio bands. Anyone within range with a wireless network
BCA 1ST SEMISTER INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LAB(CACO1P)
VEDANTA DEGREE COLLEGE, RAICHUR
DEPT OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
RAICHUR UNIVERSITY
interface controller can attempt to access the network; because of this, Wi-Fi is more
vulnerable to attack (called eavesdropping) than wired networks.
 Wi-Fi also allows communications directly from one computer to another
without an access pointintermediary. This is called ad hoc Wi-Fi transmission.

 Frame Control: Indicates the type of frame (control, management, or data) and
provides control information. Control information includes whether the frame is
to or from a DS, fragmentation information, and privacy information.
 Duration/Connection ID: If used as a duration field, indicates the time (in
microseconds) the channel will be allocated for successful transmission of a MAC
frame. In some control frames, this field contains an association, or connection,
identifier.

 Addresses: The number and meaning of the 48-bit address fields depend on
context. The transmitter address and receiver address are the MAC addresses of
stations joined to the BSS that are transmitting and receiving frames over the
wireless LAN. The service set ID (SSID) identifies the wireless LAN over which a
frame is transmitted.
 For an IBSS, the SSID is a random number generated at the time the network is
formed. For a wireless LAN that is part of a larger configuration the SSID
identifies the BSS over which the frame is trans- mitted; specifically, the SSID is
the MAC-level address of the AP for this BSS.
 Finally the source address and destination address are the MAC addresses of
stations, wireless or otherwise, that are the ultimate source and destination of
this frame. The source address may be identical to the transmitter address and
the destination address may be identical to the receiver address.
 Sequence Control: Contains a 4-bit fragment number subfield, used for
fragmentation and reassembly, and a 12-bit sequence number used to number
frames sent between a given transmitter and receiver.
 Frame Body: Contains an MSDU or a fragment of an MSDU. The MSDU is a LLC
protocol data unit or MAC control information. Frame Check Sequence: A 32-bit
cyclic redundancy check.

7. How to Enter BIOS Setup on Windows PCs

Each and every time you press your PC’s power button, the BIOS is the first operation to
load your operating system and all of the personal settings that make your computer
your own.

Whether you need to update your BIOS or sweep it clean of systematic bugs, knowing how
to enter BIOS is essential for PC users. In order to access BIOS on a Windows PC, you
must press your BIOS key set by your manufacturer which could be F10, F2, F12, F1, or
DEL.
If your PC goes through its power on self-test startup too quickly, you can also enter BIOS
through Windows 10’s advanced start menu recovery settings.
One thing PC users love most about Windows is how many options you can configure
directly within your selected system.
What is BIOS?
As your PC’s most important startup program, BIOS, or Basic Input/Output System, is
the built-in core processor software responsible for booting up your system.
Typically embedded into your computer as a motherboard chip, the BIOS functions as a
catalyst for PC functionality action.
Programmed on an erasable, programmable, read-only memory (EPROM) chip, BIOS is
stored on this memory chip which retains data when the power source is switched off.
When the PC is powered back on, BIOS retrieves that same stored data.

What are the basic functions of BIOS?

Now that you understand what BIOS is, let’s dive into what it really does for your desktops,
laptops, and tablets. BIOS’s functionality can be broken down into four key
responsibilities.
1. POST
As we mentioned before, POST is an acronym for the Power-On Self Test that your PC runs
through the moment you turn it on. POST tests the hardware of your PC and ensures that
there is nothing out of order and no errors present with your operating system.
POST goes through everything from your keyboard and disk drive to your RAM speed in a
computer and integrated ports. Should everything be in order, POST will continue as
usual and allow your PC to boot normally.
If there is a detected error, BIOS will issue an error message that may come in the form of
displayed text or a series of error-indicating beeps.

These beeps are always signals to certain messages, so if you happen to get this result, you
will need to check out what it means for your computer’s hardware [1].

2. CMOS setup
Your PC stores all low-level settings like system time and hardware configuration within its
CMOS.
This means that every change you make to your BIOS structure is saved on this special
memory chip called the Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor, or CMOS.
The CMOS setup is responsible for setting your password, time, and date.
3. Bootstrap loader
The program that lives within your computer’s EPROM or ROM, the bootstrap loader is
tasked with reading your PC’s hard drive boot sector to move along the complete
operating system load.
When you restart your PC, the bootstrap loader activates the POST, then loads Windows 10
into memory. Newer PCs have replaced the bootstrap loader with an EFI, or Extensible
Firmware Interface.
4. BIOS drivers
BIOS drivers are the many programs stored in your computer’s many memory chips. These
low-level drivers are used to boot your system and prompt basic operational controls
on your PC.

How to access Windows 7, Vista, and XP BIOS

The same method of pressing your designated hotkey during boot-up should be able to gain
you access into your BIOS. Be sure to press that button as soon as you see your
manufacturer’s brand logo.
Older operating systems tend to load more slowly, so your window of time to press your
designated hotkey should be wide enough for prompt BIOS access. Follow this three-step
method to enter BIOS on Windows 7 or later.
Step 1. Turn off your computer
On older operating systems, you can only access BIOS just before the Microsoft Windows
logo appears on your computer screen.

Step 2. Power your PC on

Step 3. Press the BIOS hotkey

The single keystroke or combination of pressed keys will open BIOS on your PC. Oftentimes
your computer will indicate on the startup screen which key or keys need to be pressed in
order to enter BIOS.

I can’t access BIOS, what do I do?

If you’re still struggling to figure out how to enter BIOS on your Windows 10 desktop
computer, you may find yourself in somewhat of a pickle.
Whether your startup is too fast or you suspect a virus has attacked your hardware, you
need access into your BIOS as soon as possible. Fortunately, we’ve got what you need. Try
these two troubleshooting methods to gain access into your BIOS.
Troubleshoot method #1: Disable fast startup
If your PC is powering on too quickly for you to know when to press your BIOS hotkey, your
timing may be keeping you from accessing your PC’s BIOS.
To slow down your boot time and open your window for hotkey pressing, you will need to
disable fast startup. To do this:
1. Locate “Power options” in your control panel
2. Press “Choose what the power button does” in the left panel (you’ll note that the
shutdown settings are all greyed out and unavailable for modification)
3. Press “Change settings that are currently available” located above the power button and
lid settings (this will allow you to uncheck or check boxes to modify your shutdown
settings)
4. Uncheck “Turn on fast startup”
5. Try restarting your PC and entering BIOS with your hotkey again

Troubleshoot method #2: Use an emergency boot disk

In the case that your PC refuses to enter BIOS or gives you the dreaded blue screen of
death, you could be faced with boot failure. In order to access BIOS, you can try utilizing
an emergency boot disk to bring your PC back to life via USB drive.
Once the USB drive boots up, you should be able to select a boot device at the startup.
1. Click “Repair your computer” instead of the centered “Install now” button
2. Click “Troubleshoot”
3. Click “UEFI Firmware Settings”
4. Click “Restart”
If nothing works, you may need to resort to finding a computer repair specialist in your area
to help solve your issues.

1. How to search the Web
There are many different search engines you can use, but some of the most popular
include Google, Yahoo!, and Bing. To perform a search, you'll need to navigate to a
search engine in your web browser, type one or more keywords—also known
as search terms—then press Enter on your keyboard. In this example, we'll search
for recipes.

After you run a search, you'll see a list of relevant websites that match your search
terms. These are commonly known as search results. If you see a site that looks
interesting, you can click a link to open it. If the site doesn't have what you need,
you can simply return to the results page to look for more options.
