Information technology
Lecture 1
Information Technology

 Information technology refers to anything related to computing technology.

 Information technology (IT) is the use of any computers, storage, networking

and other physical devices and processes to create, process, store, Secure,
retrieve, transmit, and manipulate all forms of electronic data or
information.
 Information Technology is any computer-based tool used to work
with information and support the information - processing business needs.
Data vs information

 Data is a raw input(facts, figures and details) that when processed or

arranged makes a meaningful outputs (information).

 Information refers to an organized , meaningful, useful interpretation of

data.
Uses of information technology in our daily life

 It is used in every sphere of life like in education, communication, business,

treatment and banking etc..
 Other than your daily gadgets like Laptops, tablets, cell phone, etc how do
you book tickets online? Pay bills online? Do you withdraw money from ATM?
Do you use a credit card?
 We use technology in almost everything
The role of computer in Information Technology

 The computer serves a number of roles across the entire spectrum of Information
Technology. That’s why many people tend to think of “Information Technology” as being
interchangeable with “Computer Science”.

 So, at the front end, computers can be used to collect data. That data can come from
sensors, user input or can even be created internally based on calculation or
correlations of other data. Data that’s collected is initially stored in computer memory.
 That data can then be transferred to longer term storage which is also managed and
controlled by computer. This normally takes the form of disk arrays made up of physical
hard drives or SSDs.

 The data can be analysed, processed, correlated, transformed and presented as

information. Computers and specialized software perform that function and create the
visualizations, reports and a UI (user interface) to that data that presents the
information in context.
Tools used in information technology

 Cloud Computing
Cloud computing through the provision of internet hosting services has simplified daily
tasks much more easily and efficiently. Integrating a cloud into your IT procedures allows
you to focus on optimizing the use of your shared resources, saving a lot of time and
energy.
 Mobile technology
Mobile technology is a great way to be flexible and have the freedom to run your business
anywhere, anytime (with a stable Internet connection). Therefore, investing in mobility
tools for your business will not only increase productivity but will also help your team to
work more efficiently.
 Enterprise content management
The success of a business depends on its ability to properly store and organize your business
information. Enterprise Content Management (ECM) does exactly that. Businesses that have
been around the longest may have some old files stored in paper files and stored
somewhere. ECM intelligently captures all your physical files, manages, stores and
preserves everything through a simple organizational process. This procedure makes the
stored information much easier to access and easier to manage.

 Social networks
Social media is a powerful tool that elevates business and increases your global presence in
the business world. This tool facilitates direct communication between you and your
consumers and helps you take control of the image you present to the public. Hoot suite, a
management system, allows you to keep track of multiple social media accounts through a
simple interface, making it easy for anyone to succeed.
 Online conference systems
Online conference systems have emerged today as an excellent alternative to expensive
and time-consuming business travel. A well-supported web conferencing platform gives
you the ability to communicate with business partners or potential customers if you can't
meet them in person. When using it, make sure your connection works properly.
Three components of information technology

 Computers
 Communications
 Know-How
Information technology know-how consists of:

 Familiarity with the tools of IT.

 Possession of the skills needed to use these tools.
 An understanding of when to use IT to solve a problem or create an opportunity.
