Practice Mathematics Writing Assignment – Module 2

In this activity, we’ll review some of what you’ve learned in prior mathematics courses
about one-to-one functions and inverse functions.

Remember the following useful ways of thinking about inverse functions:


• The inputs for f −1 are the outputs of f ; the outputs of f −1 are the
inputs for f .

• If f has an inverse function f −1 , then whenever f (a) = b, we have


f −1 (b) = a.

• The domain of f −1 is the same as the range of f ; the range of f −1 is


the same as the domain of f .

• If we are given y as a function of x, then we can obtain an inverse


function by writing x (the original input) in terms of y.

• The graph of f −1 is the reflection across the line y = x of the graph


of f .

1. Use the graph below of the one-to-one function f (x) for the following
exercises.
(a) Find f (6).

(b) Find f (x) = 0.

(c) Find f −1 (x) = 6. (d) Find f −1 (0).

(e) Using the graph above, determine the domain and range of f (x).
Explain how you found your answer.

range of f −1 (x). Explain how you found your answer.

(g) Using the information above, graph f −1 (x) on the previous page’s
