Input Output

SSC CGL 2017 – Rank 60 AAO in CAG (1.5 years)

CAT 2016 – 96.5 percentile AIR 3 in UGC NET

Commerce Dec 2018
Concept

These type of questions are based on a computer or

a machine in which we feed an input and it
performs some operations to provide us an output.

Our job is to analyse the steps and recreate the

process of the machine with a different input.

Input can consist of only numbers, only alphabets

or their combinations.
Concept

These are the main types of operations:

1. Shifting (fixed pattern)

2. Arranging (fixed order)

3. Arithmetic Operations

4. Miscellaneous
Concept

Shifting:

Input: Apple Ball Cherry Dog

Step-1: Ball Apple Cherry Dog

Step-2: Ball Cherry Apple Dog
Step-3: Ball Cherry Dog Apple
Concept

Arranging:

Input: Apple Ball Cherry Dog

Step-1: Dog Apple Ball Cherry

Step-2: Dog Cherry Apple Ball
Step-3: Dog Cherry Ball Apple
Concept

Arithmetic Operations:

Input: 2 3 5 7

Step-1: 8 12 20 28
Step-2: 1 25 169 441
Step-3: 0 12 84 220
Concept

Miscellaneous Operations:

Input: Apple Ball Cherry Dog

Step-1: Ap5 Ba4 Ch6 Do3

Step-2: Bp10 Ca8 Dh12 Eo6
Step-3: Bq20 Cb16 Di24 Ep12
Concept
Shifting goes on endlessly whereas arranging ends
as soon as the order intended is achieved. First
check for arrangement; then check for shifting next

Tip to check of arrangement: If either the first or the

last word (or number) of all the steps (excluding
input) remains unchanged then it is (almost) certain
that it is an arrangement problem. Also you can
look at the output or the final step.

Tip to check for shifting: Check if words (or

numbers) from a particular position are going to a
fixed particular position and it is repeated.
Concept
Types of rearrangement/shifting • 3-step rearrangement/shifting
Input: Ram was here only
• 1-step rearrangement/shifting Step I: was Ram here only
Input: Ram was here only Step II: was Ram only here
Step I: was Ram here only Step III: Here Ram only was
Step II: Ram was here only Step IV: Ram here only was
Step III: was Ram here only Step V: Ram here was only
Step VI: only here was Ram

• 2-step (or alternate) rearrangement/shifting

Input: Ram was here only
Step I: was Ram here only
Step II: was Ram only here
Step III: Ram was only here
Step IV: Ram was here only
Concept

Types of rearrangement/shifting

• Single rearrangement/shifting in one step

Input- Ram Is Good Student In School

Step 1- Good Ram Is Student In School
Step 2- Good In Ram Is School

• Dual rearrangements/shifting in one step

Input- Ram Is Good Student In School

Step 1- Good Ram Is Student School In
Step 2- Good Is Student School Ram In
Concept

Possible ways of Rearrangement:

• Increasing/decreasing order (numbers/words)

• Filling from left side only or right side only or

left-right alternately

• Filling by interchange or by push

Note: In arrangement problems, the contents of an

earlier step can never be determined with certainty.
Concept
Push Type
Input: gone was the excitement of Friday polls
Step I: excitement gone was the of Friday polls
Step II: excitement Friday gone was the of polls
Step III: excitement Friday gone of was the polls
Step IV: excitement Friday gone of polls was the
Step V: excitement Friday gone of polls the was

Interchange type:
Input: gone was the excitement of Friday polls
Step I: excitement was the gone of Friday polls
Step II: excitement Friday the gone of was polls
Step III: excitement Friday gone the of was polls
Step IV: excitement Friday gone of the was polls
Step V: excitement Friday gone of polls was the
Step VI: excitement Friday gone of polls the was
Concept

Indicative logics for numbers:

• Based on Increasing/Decreasing order

• Based on even or odd numbers

• Based on digital sum

• Based on Squares/Cubes

• Based on Digital Product

Concept

Indicative logics for words:

• Based on Alphabetical order (or reverse order)

• Based on place value of letters

• Based on Number of Letters

• Number of letters are Odd/Even

• Based on number of vowels/consonants

An alphanumeric machine accepts letters as input and delivers output in the
form of numbers through different steps. Each step is obtained by applying
an operation different from the previous step. Each step gives output taking
input from the previous step. Below mentioned is an illustration of the same.

Input transform abnormal small large expectations normal results into

Step 1 4 9 1 4 25 4 4 4
Step 2 8 13 5 29

Step 3 3 16
Step 4 18
