Trig Word Problems Solving

The document contains a series of mathematical problems related to trigonometric functions and modeling real-world scenarios, such as tides, temperature variations, and the motion of a paddle wheel. It includes questions about maximum heights, time to reach those heights, and specific conditions like depth and temperature at given times. The problems require the application of sine functions and periodic motion concepts to find solutions.

a) What is the maximum height that the passenger reaches

above the ground?

b) How many minutes after boarding the ride will the passenger
reach the maximum height for the first time?

c) How long does it take to make one revolution?

d) During one revolution, for how long (in minutes) is the

passenger above a height of 75 metres?

e) Sketch 1 cycle of the function to verify your results.

1. The depth of water in a fishing port is affected by the tides. It can be represented
𝜋
on a particular day by 𝑑 (𝑡) = 4 sin ( 6 𝑡) + 28 where 𝑑 is measured in metres and 𝑡 is
the time elapsed, in hours after midnight. Determine when the depth of the water
is exactly 24 m during in 24 hours.

2. The outside temperature (in degress Celcius) on a certain day was modeled by
𝜋
the equation 𝑇 = 7 sin 12 (𝑡 − 10) + 12 where 𝑡 is the time after midnight in
hours. At what times of the day was the termperature 10°𝐶. Give your
answer to the nearest minute using a 24 hour format.

3. Two people swing jump ropes, as shown in the diagram. The highest point of
the middle of each rope is 75 inches above the ground, and the lowest point is
3 inches. The rope makes 2 revolutions per second. Write a model for the
height of the rope as a function of time given that the rope is at its lowest
point when 𝑡 = 0. When would the height of the rope be 10 inches off the
ground during the first second. Round answers to thousandth

4. The paddle wheel of a steamboat is 22 feet in diameter and is turning at 3

revolutions per minute. The axel of the wheel is 8 feet above the surface of
the water. Assume that a point P of the edge of the paddle wheel is at (0,19)
at a time of t = 0 seconds. When is Point P at a height of 10 feet?
