Activity Guide - Exploring Two Columns - Unit 5 Lesson 4

The document outlines an activity guide for exploring data through crosstabs and scatter plots using various datasets. It includes analysis of parts of speech in a 'Words' dataset, favorite classes among different grades, and relationships between median household income and college graduation rates in US states. Additionally, it discusses patterns observed in population data and suggests further research methods to investigate correlations.

Activity Guide - Exploring Two Columns

Cross Tab
1. Crosstab - Use the “Words” dataset
Use: Length & Part of Speech
a. Chart - Copy and paste the chart you created in the space below

b. Which part of speech shows up most often in this data set?

Nouns show up more often in this data set.

c. Which part of speech seems to be longest, on average?

Nouns seem to be longest on average.

d. Which part of speech seems to be shortest, on average?

The infinitive marker seems to be the shortest on average.

e. About how long is the "typical" noun? How can you tell?
The typical nouns is through 4 and 6 cause it is highlighted blue the brightest and has the most
number wise.

2. Crosstab - Use the “Favorite Classes” dataset

Use: Grade & Favorite Class
a. Chart - Copy and paste the chart you created in the space below

b. Which class do Seniors like the most?

Seniors like computer science the most.

c. Which grade likes History the most?

Freshmen like history the most.

d. What is one other interesting pattern you can see in this diagram?
Over all most of the time the students like history no matter the year.

Scatter
1. Scatter - Use the “US States” dataset
Use: Median Household Income & Percent Adult College Graduates
a. Chart - Copy and paste the chart you created in the space below

e. What is the range of incomes on this chart?

The range is from 40,000 to 80,000 on this chart.

f. What is the range of percentages of adult college graduates?

The range is from 20% to around 45% of adult college graduates.

g. Do you see a relationship between income and percent of adult college graduates? What does the
relationship look like?
The relationship is higher the percent the more the income.

3. Scatter - Use the “US States” dataset

Use: You pick the columns to compare
In the States table find a combination of columns in a Scatter Plot that you think show an interesting pattern

a. Chart - Copy and paste the chart you created in the space below

b. What is the pattern that you observe in this data?

The pattern shows as the population increases the population rank decreases.

c. Describe what this pattern might mean or indicate.

This means states with higher populations are ranked higher.

d. Usually we can't be sure whether the pattern we observe in a scatter chart (a correlation) means that
one of the columns is causing the other. Give one way you might do more research to try to investigate
the cause of the pattern you found.
You could investigate by comparing population trends over time or analyzing factors like
migration and growth rates.
