Counselor Notes
Hello parents! It’s hard to believe that October is over and we are into November with the holidays quickly approaching. Our Seniors
have been working diligently on their college applications – please know that if any assistance is needed or if there is anything I can do
to support your child, do not hesitate to call or email. Dr. Travis-McCarter is our college and career specialist and is a wonderful
resource; she has an open-door policy. We are encouraging students to meet with her to especially discuss scholarship opportunities.

I have had the opportunity to work with our IB students in raising money for hurricane victims, Tom and Mary Ann. Students who raise
$20 or more and hand in the money by the 13th, will be invited to a luncheon on November 15th, at which Tom and Mary Ann will be in
attendance. It will be a valuable experience for the students to present them with a check and collectively engage in the “gift” of giving
back.

I am so grateful to be a part of the IB family. I look forward to getting to know all of the students and IB parents. I am thankful for the
warm welcome I have received from you and am honored to be a part of this program. Mrs. Uhler and the IB teachers work so hard to
support the students through this program and it is such a pleasure to be a part of the team.

Thank you – Caroline Toadvine – IB School Counselor

Classroom Notes
9th Grade
FL Pre-IB English 1 - Unit 2 is called "The Call to Adventure." Students will read multiple forms of literature (fiction, nonfiction, and
poetry) and recognize how individuals learn from a journey. At the end of the unit, students will use these examples to write an
expository essay using the prompt: "What can we learn as we journey through life?"
Our first journey was "The Power of the Hero's Journey," where student learned about Joseph Campbell's iconic archetype of
storytelling that holds true from Greek mythology through the latest superhero film! As part of the lesson, students used board games
created by Mrs. Williams's classes.
Please be aware that our Unit 3 topic is called "Declaring Your Genius." I want to give you all some advance notice that your student will
need a book for our unit book study: Outliers: The Story of Success" by Malcolm Gladwell. They will need to have this in class by
Wednesday, January 15. They do not need to read over the holiday break! Thank you all for your support of your students—they are
doing great! Amy Myers
Geometry Honors - We started on the Unit 4 that is related with Triangle Congruence. This Unit is connected with other Units, meaning
that while we learn something new, we also review and understand better the material. Topics includes rigid transformations and
congruence; prove triangle relationship; prove triangle congruence; solve congruence problems; and justify triangle congruence. Grades
are updated weekly, make sure to check Focus to see if the student is completing homework. Thank you for your support.
FL Pre-IB French 1 – Students are learning how to conjugate -er verbs. We will be beginning a chapter on "la famille" next week.
Students will be able to identify family members and describe them using adjectives.

During this month students will learn to describe the location of people and things using the present tense of regular verbs and the verb
ESTAR (to be). They will also use numbers 31 and higher to solve math problems and tell years of important events.
FL Pre-IB Art – Students completed scratchboard artwork and have begun a lesson on colored pencil and color theory. There are
several upcoming local art competitions that I am encouraging students to enter. Details can be found on google classroom or email me
if you have any questions. [email protected]

AP English Language & Composition – Students started Q2 with a project that tracked Joseph Campbell’s 17-step “Hero’s Journey”. We
created board games to illustrate how archetypal scenarios convey universal themes in literature. In addition, we are studying
argumentative reading/writing with specific focus on the Big Idea: evaluation of claims/evidence. By now, students should be on pace to
complete their first annotation check for this quarter’s independent text: “Outliers: The Story of Success” on Friday 11/22. Please save
the date for the upcoming 10th grade ELA F.A.S.T. Progress Monitoring 2 on Thursday 12/5.
FL Pre-IB Spanish 2 - Students are working on Lesson 2 “La comida”. The students are learning to describe food using the present

improved from our first one! They are gaining confidence in their analysis and speaking skills. We are starting the study of Their Eyes
Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston this week. We will do much of the reading together, but I have posted a reading schedule in
Google Classroom just in case we do not get to all the reading in class. Please check with your students to make sure they are on track!
IB Math Applications & Interpretations 1 – We are finishing up Topic 3 – Geometry and Trigonometry, then moving onto Topic 4 -
Statistics and Probability.
IB Chemistry 1 - This month we are working on our third unit, Stoichiometry. The topics in this unit are heavy on calculations! Students
watch example problems for homework, and we use class time to work on lab investigations and practice problems from past IB exam
papers. This can be a tough unit for some students, and they should reach out to me about tutoring after school or during TOK Study
Hall.

demonstrating anaerobic respiration, and chromatography with spinach leaves.

resources, such as water, waste disposal, fishing, and forestry.
AP US History – We are finishing up our Unit 4: 1800-1848. We will test on the unit during the week of 11/11. We are also working on
writing our first DBQ (document-based question) which is an essential writing portion of the AP test in May. It is worth 25% of the overall
score for the test. Our next unit is 1844-1877 and covers the events leading up to and including the Civil War. These are very large units
that cover some major events and students should be reading the additional resources provided. Thank you! Mrs. Powella
IB French 4 - Students will be introduced to the different text types used in the IB writing exam, then will be creating a brochure following
a prompt related to tourism. They will also be reviewing many grammatical structures as well as verb tenses when reading about and

change our lives. Grammar: The present perfect tense.
IB Psychology 1 – We are over halfway through the Biological Approaches to Behavior unit and will work on crafting strong SAQ and
LAQ responses.
IB Business Management 1 – Students completed the first unit of the course. They have just begun working in the Human resources
unit. We are currently on a pretty consistent schedule. Study guides are due every Wednesday. Case studies are due at the start of
class on Thursday. This is important so they can participate in peer grading. Vocabulary quizzes are on Friday.
IB TOK 1 – We are wrapping up our final lessons in TOK about the relationship between knowledge, technology, and language. On
November 11, students will begin working on the rough draft of their TOK Exhibition in class. This will be the first Internal Assessment
that students complete for the IB Program. It is important that they use class time wisely, but they will also need to work on their
Exhibition commentaries at home. The rough draft will be due on Friday, December 20 at the end of the school day. There will be tasks
due each week to make sure students are working diligently on the assignment. Also, the Quarter 2 CAS benchmark should be met by
Friday, December 6 (have one completed CAS experience and have an approved second proposal).
CAS – Juniors will be completing and submitting their first CAS experience. Students should begin another experience before the first
ends. There should be no gaps in between CAS experiences.

Powderpuff – Avril Wenk - On Tuesday, October 22, CCHS hosted its annual game of Powderpuff. Essentially, Powderpuff is football
but with a twist; the girls play on the field while the guys cheer them on. The event started off with a close game between the freshmen
and juniors, with the juniors winning by one point. The subsequent game was between the seniors and sophomores, with the seniors
coming out on top. For the finale, Class of 2025 and 2026 went head-to-head, in a fierce game; flags were ripped, people fell,
touchdowns were scored, but in the end, the seniors were the victors. Overall, the game was fun for all parties involved, with IB junior
Keira Baxter saying, “it was a fun learning experience,” and many other players sharing the same sentiment.

FL Pre-IB Sophomore Board Games in AP Language & Composition – Adalyn Ferrence - Mrs. William’s AP Lang class has finished
analyzing the common ground for the structure of mythological and fictitious stories in literature. To better comprehend the steps to a
hero’s journey, students were tasked with creating a board game that reflected the 17 common steps the stories go through. Students
were given 2 days to curate their board games using cards, boards, and costumes. On October 31st, students played the games
created by their classmates. Afterward, they voted on which they believed best represented the steps to the hero’s journey while also
being the most interactive.
