General instructions
1. Your equations and solutions may be hand-written, scanned into a PDF
format.
2. A typed solution, with all relevant circuit diagrams drawn with VISIO (or
other software), will be given a bonus mark of up to 10% the full mark
3. Once you have a PDF file for your entire assignment you can upload it to
your account on the Brightspace.
4. Only one PDF file will be accepted.

Assignment 3
A stepdown transformer, with an input sinusoidal signal of 120 Vrms and 60 Hz, provides a
voltage signal vs(t) to a bridge rectifier. The circuit is loaded by a 100 Ω resistor (R). The
required output voltage (from the bridge rectifier with a filtering capacitor) vout is 10V DC and
with ±1V ripple (i.e., Vr = 2 V). Assume all diodes are modelled using the constant voltage
model with VDO = 0.7 V.
(hint: The amplitude of the signal at the secondary side of the transformer should be calculated
taking into consideration the required DC voltage = 10 V, V_Do = 0.7 V, and the peak-to-peak
ripple voltage (Vr = 2V)).
a) Sketch the waveforms of the input and output voltage vs(t) and vout(t), respectively. Show all
details of the two curves (time instants, voltage levels, signal expressions, etc.)
b) Determine the PIV rating of the diodes.
Part II: If the filtering capacitor is connected in parallel with the load resistor R
c) In a new figure, sketch the waveforms of the input and output voltage vs(t) and vout(t),
respectively. Show all details of the two curves (time instants, voltage levels, signal expressions,
etc.).
d) find the required capacitance C of the filtering capacitor.
e) Determine the conduction angle.
f) Determine the PIV rating of the diodes.
