Tutorial-2

The document is a tutorial on regression analysis, providing various exercises to calculate lines of regression, coefficients of correlation, and predictions based on given data sets. It includes tasks involving the estimation of values based on regression equations and correlation coefficients for different scenarios. The exercises cover a range of applications, including heights of fathers and sons, grades in subjects, and correlation between different variables.

Regression

1. Find the lines of regression and coefficient of correlation for the following data
Dec 09-8M(M)
X 65 66 67 67 68 69 70 72

Y 67 68 65 66 72 72 69 71

2. From the following data, find the equation of line of regression of y on x and estimate
the most probable value of y when x = 9
X 3 6 5 4 4 6 7 5

Y 3 2 3 5 3 6 6 4

3. The height in cms of fathers (x) and of the sons (y) are given below

X 165 160 170 163 173 158 178 168 173 170 175 180

Y 173 168 173 165 175 168 173 165 180 170 173 178

Estimate the height of the son if the height of the father is 172 cms. Also estimate the height of the
father if the height of the son is 173 cms. What is the coefficient of correlation between the height
of fathers and sons

4. If  x =  y and the angle between the lines of regression is tan −1 3 , find the coefficient

of correlation.

5. The equations of the lines of regression are 3x + 2 y = 26, 6 x + y = 31 Find x, y

and r.
6. The equations of the lines of regression are 20 x − 9 y − 107 = 0 and 4x − 5 y + 33 = 0

Find x, y and r.

7. The regression lines of a sample are x + 6 y = 6, 3x + 2 y = 10 . Find x, y and r.

Also find y when x = 12.

8. In a partially destroyed laboratory record of an analysis of a correlation data, the following

results are available:
Variance of x is 9,

Regression equations: 8 x − 10 y + 66 = 0, 40 x − 18 y = 214

Find (i) the means of x and y (ii) the standard deviation of y

(iii) the coefficient of correlation between x and y.

9. The following data regarding the heights (y) and weights (x) of 100 college students are
given as follows

 x = 15000,  x 2
= 2272500,  y = 6800,  y 2
= 463025,  xy = 1022250
Find the coefficient of correlation between height and weight. Also

find the lines of regression of height and weight.

10. Following table shows the final grades in algebra and physics obtained by 10 students
selected at random from a large group of students. Find two regression equations. If a
student receives a grade of 75 in algebra, what is his expected grade in physics? If a
student receives a grade of 95 in physics, what is his expected grade in algebra?

Algebra 75 80 93 65 87 71 98 68 84 77

Physics 82 78 86 72 91 80 95 72 89 74
