Homework 3
1. Consider the momentum and energy integral solutions near the forward stagnation point of
an heated cylinder discussed in class.
Starting with the stagnation point solution, perform a numerical solution to determine the
convection heat transfer characteristics for an isothermal cylinder with a radius of 10 cm
and a surface temperature of 340 K that is in cross flow of saturated liquid water with an
upstream velocity of 0.25 m and free stream temperature of 300 K.
Report your results with respect to the angle, θ, measured in clockwise direction from the
forward stagnation point.
a) formulate the hydrodynamic and thermal problems for the numerical solution.
b) estimate the angle at which boundary layer separation occurs.
c) plot the Pohlhausen Parameter, Λ, with respect to θ.
d) plot the wall shear stress with respect to θ.
e) plot the hydrodynamic and thermal boundary layer thicknesses with respect to θ.
f) plot the convective heat transfer coefficient with respect to θ.
g) Discuss your results in comparison with those from stagnation point solutions as well
as the trends illustrated in Figure 1.
Evaluate properties at the film temperature. Feel free to use commercially available routines
or implement own method for ODE integration.

2. Determine the Nusselt number expression for laminar flow between parallel channels with
prescribed wall temperature using uniform velocity profile (slug flow) and fully developed
temperature profile.
3. Consider a hydrodynamically fully developed flow in a circular pipe. Derive expressions for
the velocity profile, wall shear stress and Darcy friction factor for this flow. (Not graded.)
4. Determine the Nusselt number expression for hydrodynamically and thermally fully-developed
laminar flow in a circular pipe with prescribed wall heat flux. (Not graded.)
5. Determine the Nusselt number expression for thermally developing laminar flow in a circular
pipe with prescribed wall heat flux based on a fully developed (parabolic) velocity profile.
The symbols and terminology follow the lecture notes unless otherwise is noted.
Computer algebra program can be used for analysis, plotting, and reporting purposes. Clearly
define all symbols used, show all steps of your solution including computer implementation details
if a numerical approach is adopted.
