Lesson 7 Combinations of Transformations

The document outlines the effects of various transformations on graphs, including vertical and horizontal stretches, compressions, translations, and reflections. It provides a step-by-step guide for graphing functions by applying these transformations to a base function. Additionally, it includes examples and practice problems for sketching transformed functions and writing equations of transformed functions.

The a affects the graph by stretching or compressing ___________________ by

a factor of a .

If the a is negative, there is a reflection about the __________________.

The d affects the graph by translating ______________________ d units.

The c affects the graph by translating ______________________ c units.

The k affects the graph by stretching or compressing ____________________ by

a factor of .

If the k is negative, there is a reflection about the _________________.

Graphing Point by Point

1) Start by graphing the base function ( ).

2) Graph a by taking the significant point (x , y ) and multiply only the y -values by a so that the
point (x , y ) becomes (x , ay).

k (x , y ) x
3) Graph by taking the significant point and multiply only the -values by so that the

(x , y )
point becomes .

4) Graph d by taking the significant point (x , y ) and adding d to the x -value so that the point
(x , y ) becomes (x +d , y).

5) Graph c by taking the significant point (x , y ) and adding c to the y -value so that the point
(x , y ) becomes (x , y + c).

Example 1 – Sketching Graphs of Transformed Functions

1. Given the graph of f ( x )=| x|, describe how you would
graph g ( x )=−f ( x−3 )+ 4 using transformations.

2. a) Using transformations, sketch the graph of

y= √ 2 x+ 4+ 1.

Hint: Rewrite 2 x+ 4 in factored form to determine the

horizontal translation.
Example 2 – Writing Equations of Transformed Functions
1. The function y=f (x ) has been transformed into y=af (k (x−d ))+c . Write the following in
the appropriate form:
1
(a) a vertical compression by a factor of , a reflection in the x -axis and a translation 3 units
2
right.

(b) a vertical stretch by a factor of 3, a horizontal stretch by a factor of 2, a translation left 5

and up 4 , and a reflection in the y -axis.
