Lesson 6 Vertical Horizontal STR Comp

The document discusses vertical and horizontal stretches and compressions of functions, comparing forms y=f(x) and y=af(x) for vertical transformations, and y=f(kx) for horizontal transformations. It includes examples, mapping notation, and instructions for creating tables of values and graphs. Homework assignments are also provided for practice.

MCR3U Vertical and Horizontal Stretches and Compressions

Ms. Kueh
Vertical Stretch and Compressions: Comparing functions of the form y=f (x ) and y=af ( x)

Create the table of values for the given functions and graph them on the same grid.
2 2 2
y=x y=2 x y=0.5 x

If a> 1, the graph __________________________________________________________________

If 0< a<1, the graph________________________________________________________________

Mapping Notation:
To show the change in f (x) in mapping notation we would write

( x , f ( x ) ) →(x , af ( x ))

How you say it (State the transformations):

Example 1 For function y=3 x 2, what is the base function?

Describe the transformation. Graph it.

1 3
Example 2 For function y= x , what is the base function?
4
Describe the transformation. Graph it.
Horizontal stretch and compressions: Comparing functions in the form of y=f (x ) and y=f (kx)

Compare the table of values for y=x 2 and y= ( 2 x )2 then graph.

What you do notice about the graph of y= ( 2 x )2 compared to ¿ x 2 ?

Make a table of values for y= ( 0.5 x )2 and graph. What do you notice about this graph compared to
2
y=x ?

If k > 1, the graph ________________________________________________________________

If 0< k <1, the graph ____________________________________________________________

Mapping Notation: ( x , f ( x ))→ ( 1k x , f ( x ) )

How you say it (State the transformations):
Example 3 For function y=¿3 x∨¿ , what is the base function?
Describe the transformation. Graph it.

Example 4 y=
√ 1 , what is the base function?
2
x
Describe the transformation. Graph it.
