lesson-3-seven-functions

The document outlines various parent functions, including linear, quadratic, cubic, root, exponential, absolute value, and reciprocal functions. It provides the function equations and prompts for the domain and range of each function, as well as information about asymptotes for certain graphs. Additionally, it encourages the use of online graphing tools like Geogebra and Desmos for visualizing these functions.

MCR3U Parent Functions

Parent functions are the simplest functions in a family (a group of functions with similar
characterics.)

Check graphs at home on the graphing program geogebra.org or desmos.com

It’s free! These are extremely useful tools for this course.

In the program, use ^ for exponents. √ (x ) for square root. |(x)| for absolute value.

An asymptote is a line that a

2 graph gets closer and closer
3 to. In this case, the graph
never actually touches the
line.

This graph has one

asymptote. What is it?
6. Absolute Value f ( x )=| x|

The absolute value sign, , means to take the value of the number and drop the negative
signs. For example, the absolute value of – 5 which is written as |5| is 5.
