Problem: Observatory Design and City Planning

An architectural firm has been hired to design an observatory that includes a circular observation deck, a
parabolic telescope mirror, an elliptical amphitheater, and hyperbolic walkways for an innovative city
park. Help the firm solve each part of the design.

1. Circular Observation Deck

The observation deck has a circular shape and will be centered at the origin of a coordinate
plane. The deck needs to have a radius of 50 meters. Write the equation for the deck’s boundary
and find the coordinates of any point 50 meters away from the center.

2. Parabolic Telescope Mirror

The observatory will use a parabolic mirror to focus light to a single point. If the focus of the
parabola needs to be 10 meters away from the vertex, and the vertex of the parabola is located
at (0,0) find the equation of the parabola.

3. Elliptical Amphitheater
For an outdoor amphitheater, the architects need an elliptical design where sound reflects
perfectly from one focus to another. The amphitheater will have its major axis along the x-axis,
with a total length of 80 meters and a minor axis of 60 meters. Determine the equation of the
ellipse and find the foci to ensure optimal sound quality.

4. Hyperbolic Walkways
Finally, the park's design includes two hyperbolic paths that diverge around a central statue. If
the paths have vertices 30 meters apart, along the x-axis, and the foci are 50 meters apart, find
the equation of the hyperbola.

5. A park has a circular flower bed with a radius of 5 meters. A path surrounds the flower bed, and
the center of the flower bed is located at point (3,4). Write the equation of the circle that
represents the flower bed.

6. A fountain's water stream follows a parabolic path. The highest point of the water stream
reaches 3 meters above the ground and is directly above the spout located at x=0. The water hits
the ground again at x=4. Write an equation to represent the path of the water.

7. A jogging path in an elliptical shape has a length of 200 meters along its major axis and 100
meters along its minor axis. The center of the ellipse is at the origin. Write the equation of the
ellipse.

8. A telescope on the ground is directed at a satellite. The telescope has a reflective surface in the
shape of a hyperbola, with its foci located at (5,0) and (−5,0). The difference between the
distances from any point on the hyperbola to each focus is 6 units. Write the equation of the
hyperbola.
