1.

Dr, Brian Little presents a distinctive view of how personality shapes our lives- and why this
matters. He also makes the case for a third nature to the human condition- the pursuit of
personal projects, idealistic dreams, and creative ventures that’s shapes both people’s lives and
their personalities.

The three natures: Biogenetic- our neurophysiology. Sociogenic o second nature which has to do
with the cultural and social aspects ofour lives. And third, what makes you individually you-
idiosyncratic- what he calls your “idiogenic” nature.

Personality refers to individual differences in characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and

behaving. The study of personality focuses on two main areas: understanding individua
differences in particular personality characteristics such as socialblity or irriitabity. The other is
understanding how the varois parts of a person come together as a whole.

NUMBER 2 AND 5: The big 5 personality traits OCEAN (openness, conscientiousness, extroversion,
agreeableness, and neuroticism)

O- Openness-this trait features characteristics such as imagination and insight. People with this
trait tend to have a broad range of interests. Those who are high in this trait are curious about
the world and others. They are adventurous, eager to learn new things and enjoy new
experiences.
People who are low int his train are often much more traditional and may struggle with abstract
thinking. They may also resist new ideas, aren’t very imaginative, and dislike abstract or
theoretical concepts.

C-Conscientiousness- This includes high levels of thoughtfulness, good impulse control, and
goal-directed behaviors. Highly conscientious individuals tend to be organized and mindful of
the details. These people plan ahead, think before they act, and are mindful of deadlines. They
also enjoy having a set schedule, pay close attention to detail, and they spend time preparing
and finishing important tasks right away.
People with Lower conscientious dislike structures and schedules. These individuals are messy,
fail to return things or put them back where they belong. They procrastinate important tasks
and fail to complete necessary or assigned tasks.

E-Extraversion (or extroversion)- This is charachterized by excitability, socialbility, talkativeness,

assertiveness and high amounts of emotional expressiveness. People who are high in
extraversion are outgoing and tend to gain energy in social settings. Being around others help
them feel energized and excited. Extraverted people like to start conversations, find it easy to
meet and talk to new people, having a wide social circle of friends and acquaintances. They also
habe the tendency to say things before thinking about them.
People who are low in extraversion or introverted tend to be more reserved and have less
energy to expend in social settings. Social events can feel draining and introverts often require a
period of solitude amd quiet in order to “recharge”. Introverts dislike being the center of
attention. They find it difficult to start conversations and dislikes making small talk. They
carefully think things through before speaking.
A-Agreeablness- This incldes attributes such as trust, altruism, kindness, affection, and other
prosocial behaviors. People who are high in agreeablesness tend to be more cooperative while
those low in this trait tend to be more competitive and sometimes even manipulative. Those
more agreeable have a great deal of interest in other people and care about others. They assist
others who are in need of help, feel empathy and concern for other people. They enjoy
contributing to the happiness of other people.
Peoplw who are less agreeable take little interest in others and don’t care about how other
people feel. They have little interest in other peoples problems, insults and belittles others.
Sometimes they also manipulates others to get what they want.

N-Neuroticism- this trait is characterized by sadness, moodiness, and emotional instability.

Individuals who are high in this trait tend to experience mood swings, anxiety, irritability and
sadness. They struggle to bounce back after stressful events.
Those Low in this trait tend to be more stable and emotionally resilient. They are relaxed and
don’t worry about too much.
