Computer Graphics Notes

Computer graphics – all of those you see in the computer

Photos vs Computer Graphics
Photos – is an output a device. Example camera
CG and ICG
Basic Elements of CG
1. Modelling
2. Rendering
3. Animation
4. Interaction
General Application of CG
1. CAD
2. Image Synthesis
3. Entertainment
4. Visualization
5. Multimedia
6. Graphical User Interface
7. Virtual Reality
8. Desktop Publishing
Computer Graphics for movies
The Entertainment industry plays many important roles in the field of computer graphics:
1. Leaders in quality and artistry
2. Not slaves to conceptual purity
3. Big budgets and tight schedules
4. Constant reminder that there is more to CG than technology.
Computer Graphics for Games
Impacts from game’s industry
1. Focus on interactivity
2. Cost-effective solutions
3. Avoiding computation and other tricks
4. Games drive the baseline
Example: (Minecraft, Dota, Mobile Legend)
Computer for Medical Imaging
1. New data representations and modalities
2. Drives issues of precision and correctness
3. Focus on presentation and interpretation of data
4. Construction of models form acquired data
Computer Aided Design
1. Drives the high-end of the hardware market
2. Integration of computing and display resources
3. Reduced design cycles (Faster systems sooner)
Example: Autocad for structural engineering

Graphical User Interfaces (GUIS)

UI/UX
Early Applications of Computer Graphics
1. Data Visualization (Charts and Graphs: Excel and PPT)
2. Computer Aided Design (CAD)
- Wireframe
Computer Graphics Applications (Present)
1. Virtual Reality
- VR: user interacts and views with a 3D world using “more natural” means
2. Data Visualization
- Scientific, Engineering, Medical data
- Visualizing millions to billions of data points
- See trends
- Different schemes
3. Education and Training
- Models of physical, financial, social systems
- Comprehension of complex systems
4. Computer Art
- Fine and commercial art
- Performance art
- Aesthetic computing
- SIGGRAPH
5. Games/Movies
6. Image Processing
- Inverse of Graphics
- Start with a picture
- Process picture information
- Also known as “inverse of the graphics”

7. Graphical User Interface (GUIS)

- WIMP interface
- HCI
More about CG Applications

7. Process simulation and verification.
8. Geographical data bases
9. Virtual reality
10. Office automation and electronic publishing

Introduction to Graphical Hardware

Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) (Display technologies)
- CRTs are the most common display device today
- Evacuated glass bottle (Last remaining vacuum tube)
- Heating element (filament)
- Electrons attracted to focusing anode cylinder
- Vertical and Horizontal deflection plates
- Beam strikes phosphor coating on front of tube.

Branches
Visual Computer Environment: The visual paradigm used in the human interaction with
computers – the combination of multimedia and text, rather than simple text alone.
Visual applications: These deal with massive amounts of image data, such as video and
3DD sequences, along the images, diagrams and any visible entity related to computers.
Commonly, however, people understand and associate visual computing with video,
animation and 3D modeling and design (CAD), which is only one of two main areas of the
field.
Computer Graphics:
Modelling – creating or capturing the representation of objects – motion often geometrical
Rendering – creating an image of these objects on a display device.
Animating – Making objects move by describing how they change over time.
