Value and Professional Ethics

Ethics deals with the morality aspect of human behaviour. Our college is a family
where ethics provides a rational exposition of right or wrong, good or bad,
obligatory or non-obligatory parts of voluntary actions performed by a social human
being or a group of persons. It was not until later that the ancient Greek
philosophers propounded that the notion of morality is just a construction of human
mind imbibed through social obligation and responsibility. Moral codes of conduct
were in fact derived from a set of welfare principles espoused to uphold the greatest
good of human race. Such a chronology like many other studies has both temporal
and geographical aspects. That apart, it also includes an analysis of the ethical
impact of the development of science and technology on collective as well as
individual behaviour.
Professional ethics is one important branch of Applied Ethics. In this regard, a
distinction exists between profession and occupation. An occupation is concerned
with delivering some important service as a commitment to serving people. It claims
a special relationship to the market distinct from trade. An occupation becomes a
profession when a group of individuals having the same occupation are organised
in a definite manner. This group is governed by a skilful and learned body of
organisers. Members of this group follow specific standards in discharging their
occupational duties and obligations. Besides bearing the burden of their occupation,
they commit themselves to some conspicuous moral ideals. For instance, doctors
organize to cure the sick, librarians organize to promote access to information, and
so forth. All of these people follow some set principles in discharging their
occupational duties. Professional ethics is nothing but a specific code of conduct
that prescribes how professionals ought to pursue their common ideals so that each
may accomplish the best. On the other hand, this code of conduct also protects the
professionals from certain external pressures. In short, this code of conduct is a
solution to the coordination problem at every level of performance.
Obligations = दातयत्व, बंधन, बाध्यिा,

Professional Ethics incorporates rights, duties and obligations of the

human race as well as members of the same profession and the whole
professional society. New Alipore College looks into things through humane
aspects. But, it adheres to professional ethics and principles. A profession or a
professional person has an obligation to :
Its employers
The people they serve.
Other similar or different professions
Profession as a collectively
Public interest (counting as social responsibility).

What are the basic guidelines for value education? (UPTU 2011
– 12)
Ans: The subject that enables us to understand ‘what is valuable’ for
human happiness is called value education. In order to qualify for any
course on value education, the following guidelines for the content of
the course are important:
Creed = संप्रदाय, मज़हब
Universal: It needs to be applicable to all the human beings
irrespective of cast, creed, nationalities, religion, etc., for all times and
regions.
• Rational: It has to appeal to human reasoning. It has to be
amenable to reasoning and not based on dogmas or blind beliefs.
• Natural and verifiable: It has to be naturally acceptable to the human
being who goes through the course and when we live on the basis of
such values it leads to our happiness. It needs to be experientially
verifiable, and not based on dogmas, beliefs or assumptions.
All encompassing: Value education is aimed at transforming our
consciousness and living. Hence, it needs to cover all the dimensions
(thought, behaviour, work and realization) and levels (individual,
family, society, nature and existence) of human life and profession.

Harmony = सामंजस्य, िािमेि

• Leading to harmony: The value education ultimately is targeted to

promote harmony within the individual, among human beings and with
nature.

Q. What is the need for value education?

or Write a short note on the need for value education in today’s scenario.
(MTU 2010–11)

Ans: The subject that enables us to understand ‘what is valuable’ for human
happiness is called value education. Need for value education is:
Correct identification of our aspirations. The subject which enables us to
understand ‘what is valuable’ for human happiness is called ‘value education’
(VE). Thus, VE enables us to understand our needs and visualize our goals correctly
and also indicate the direction for their fulfilment. It also helps to remove our
confusions and contradictions and bring harmony at all levels.
Understanding universal human values to fulfil our aspirations in continuity.
Values form the basis for all our thoughts, behaviours and actions. Once we know
what is valuable to us, these values becomes the basis, the anchor for our
actions. We also need to understand the universality of various human values,
because only then we can have a definite and common program for value
education. Then only we can be assured of a happy and harmonious human society.
Complimentarity of values and skills. To fulfil our aspirations both values and
skills are necessary. When we identify and set the right goals and produced
in right direction. This is known as value domain, the domain of wisdom, and when
we learn and practices to actualize this goal to develop the techniques to make
this happen in real life, in various dimensions of human endeavor (struggle). This is
known as domain of skills
Hence, there is an essential complementarity between values and skills for the
success of any human endeavor. For example, I want to lead a healthy life.
Only wishing for good health will not help me keep my body fit and healthy
and without having understood the meaning of health, I will not be able to choose
things correctly to keep my body fit and healthy
Q. What do you mean by competence in professional ethics? Explain with
examples.
Ans: Professional ethics means to develop professional competence with
ethical human conduct. Developing ethical competence in the individual
(profession) is the only effective way to ensure professional ethics. The
development of ethical competence is a long term process to be achieved
through appropriate value education. As profession is only a subset of the life
activities, the competence in profession will only be the manifestation of one’s right
understanding. The salient features characterizing this competence can be
summarized as follows:
1. Clarity about comprehensive human goal: Samadhan – Samridhi – Abhay –
Sah-astitva, and its fulfilment through universal human order.
2. Confidence in oneself: Based on the right understanding of oneself and the rest
of existence.
3. Mutually fulfilling behavior: Clarity and confidence in ethical human conduct
and its correlation with sustained personal as well as collective happiness and
prosperity.
4. Mutually enriching interaction with nature: Self-sufficiency in fulfilment of
physical needs; ability to assess the needs for physical facilities for the family
and their fulfilment through production systems ensuring harmony in the nature. In
the light of the above, one acquires the ability to identify and develop
appropriate (people-friendly and eco-friendly) technologies, production systems etc.

Human Aspiration in Human Values

Human aspirations are dreams, hopes, or ambitions to achieve life goals
that can provide a sense of purpose and direction.
Basic Human Aspiration. There are two basic aspirations of every
human being. Continuous happiness and prosperity. These are the
bases of all our desires and the efforts that go towards achieving these.

Contentment = संतोष
interpersonal =पारस्पररक, अंिवैयच्छिक
Physical = िौतिक

Some basic human aspirations include:

 Happiness: Ensured by relationships with other people
 Prosperity: Ensured by working on physical facilities
 Right understanding: The need to learn and use intelligence effectively
 Good relationships: Interpersonal relationships built at home, at work, and in society
 Physical facilities: Includes the physiological needs of individuals and the necessities
and comforts of life

Happiness
state of mind or feeling that is characterized by contentment, joy,
satisfaction, pleasure, or love. It can also be defined as being in
harmony with the situation or state in which one lives.
Ecstasy = उत्साह, असीम आनं द
Bliss = परम सुख, हषा

State = अतिव्यि करना

Trait = प्रवृति, िक्षण

Equate = समान बनाना

Happiness is a state, not a trait; in other words, it isn’t a long-lasting, permanent

feature or personality trait, but a more fleeting, changeable state.

1. Happiness is equated with feeling pleasure or contentment, meaning that

happiness is not to be confused with joy, ecstasy, bliss, or other more intense
feelings.

2. Happiness can be either feeling or showing, meaning that happiness is not

necessarily an internal or external experience, but can be both

Crucial = तनणाा यक

Prosperity
Prosperity is a state of success or wealth, but it can also be defined more
broadly as a feeling of having more than what is required. It can also include
health and happiness.
Phenomena = घटना, दे खी गई वस्तु
The feeling of having or making available more than required physical facilities is
prosperity. Almost all of us feel that wealth alone means prosperity and try to
explain this phenomenon on this non-existent or half fact. We are trying to
achieve happiness and prosperity by maximizing the accumulation and
consumption of physical facilities. It is becoming an ecological and anti-people,
and threatening human survival itself. For prosperity, two things are required
Ecological = पाररच्छथर्तिक
The material things or what we say physical facilities is related to prosperity. It is
conception that acquiring more physical facilities are prosperity. To know what
prosperity is two things are essential
The basic requirements for fulfilment of aspirations of every human being:

it is the misconception in the society that only accumulate physical facilities are prosperity.
But we need to understand it clearly. The basic requirements for fulfilling the aspirations
are:-
Right Understanding:- This refers to our skills – the need to learn and utilize our
intelligence effectively.
Good Relationships:- This refers to the interpersonal relationships that a person builds at
home, at the workplace and in society.

Physical Facilities:- This includes the physical needs of individuals and indicates the
necessities as well as the comforts of life

Harmony in Human Being

Harmony in human beings refers to a state of balance, peace, and
coherence within individuals. It involves the integration of various
aspects of a person's being, including their thoughts, emotions, values,
and actions.
If we two people are discussing in same topic and both are agree or
disagree then that is called harmony

Accordance = अनुरूपिा, समानिा

Contradiction = खण्डन, अं ितवारोध
Attainment = गुण

Attainment of Harmony:
Suppose Imagination is in accordance (or inline) with natural
acceptance, and there is no contradiction within Imagination or no
contradiction with genuine acceptance.

Once we fully and truly commit ourselves to the basics of natural

acceptance, we feel a holistic sense of inner harmony, tranquillity
and fulfilment. Otherwise, it will lead us to disharmony and
unhappiness.

A critical appraisal of the current scenario

Understanding Happiness and Prosperity in the current scenario is a
complex and multifaceted task
Both happiness and prosperity are subject Happiness and Prosperity are subjective
concept that can very greatly person to person and from one society to another.
A critical appraisal of the current scenario requires us to examine this concept in
depth and consider the various factors that influence them
Subjective of Happiness : Happiness is not Size fits all subject what brings happiness
to one person may not necessarily bring happiness to another.
It can be influenced by a wide range of factor including individual values cultural
forms and personal circumstances
istic = िौतिकवादी

Material Prosperity vs. Well-being: Prosperity is often equated with material wealth
and economic success. While financial stability is undoubtedly important for well-
being, it is not the sole determinant of happiness. Research has shown that once
basic needs are met, the correlation between wealth and happiness diminishes.
Therefore, a critical appraisal should consider not just economic indicators but also
other aspects of well-being, such as physical and mental health, social
connections, and a sense of purpose.

Well Being : Physical and Mental Health

Inequality = असमानिा

Disparity = अंिर, तवतिन्निा

Inequality and Happiness: Disparities in wealth and opportunity can significantly
impact both happiness and prosperity. High levels of income inequality within a
society can lead to feelings of injustice and social unrest, which can undermine
overall happiness and prosperity.
Therefore, addressing inequality is a crucial aspect of promoting well-being.

Environmental Sustainability:
Prosperity should not come at the expense of the environment.
unsustainable practices that harm the planet can ultimately undermine both current
and future well-being. A sustainable approach to prosperity considers the long-term
impact of economic activities on the environment.
Prevalence = फैिाव, प्रसार
Mental Health and Happiness: The state of mental health is closely linked to
happiness. The prevalence of mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety,
can significantly affect overall happiness and well-being. Addressing mental health
changes is essential for a comprehensive understanding of happiness and
prosperity.
Social Relationship
Strong social connections are a sense of belonging are fundamental to happiness

decide it self. We can verify this by the following discussion.
I am the seer : when we are reading book or listening when someone is
explaining something to us when we are watching scenery or when we
are thinking or contemplating we are engaged in the activities of seeing

Trust (Vishwas) and Respect (Samman): Foundational Values in Relationships

bedrock = मूि तसद्धान्त

Trust (Vishwas): Trust forms the bedrock of any successful relationship. It involves
having confidence and faith in the integrity, reliability, and intentions of the other
person.
Trust -> Individual, Feel Secure, comfortable in sharing their feelings

inherent = बुतनयादी, स्वािातवक

worth = महत्व, योग्य, श्रेय

constructively = रचनात्मक
Respect (Samman): Respect involves recognizing and valuing the inherent worth,
dignity, and autonomy of each individual in a relationship. It entails treating others
with consideration, empathy, and courtesy. When respect is present, conflicts are
handled constructively, and communication is characterized by empathy and
understanding.

foster = प्रोत्सातहि करना, सहायिा करना

These foundational values are crucial in fostering healthy, balanced, and long-lasting
relationships. They provide the solid ground upon which individuals can build
mutual understanding, support, and a sense of security. Trust and respect create an
environment where individuals feel valued, heard, and appreciated, ultimately
contributing to the growth and flourishing of the relationship.

Understanding The meaning of Vishwas: Differentiating Between Intention and

Competence
intention : what we really want to be

Competence = संपन्निा, योग्यिा, सामर्थ्ा , which is already we are

Trust: To be assured that the other human being wants to make me happy &
prosperous. Verify the following
Trust :
1. Trust or vishwas is the foundational value in all relationship. “To be assured
that each human being inherently wants oneself and the other to be happy
and prosperous” is known as trust.
2. Mutual trust is a shared belief that we can depend on each other to achieve a
common purpose. Trust is the expectation of people that they can rely on our
word. It is built through integrity and consistency in relationships

3. There are two aspects in trust :

i. Intention (wanting to our natural acceptance)
ii. Competence (being able to do).

Intention Competence (Ability to fulfil)

I want to be happy I am always happy
I want to be make the other happy I make other always happy
The other wants to be happy The other is always happy
The other wants to make me happy The other makes me always happy

What we really want to be What we are

1. Intention is what one aspires for (our natural acceptance) and

competence is the ability to fulfill the aspiration.
2. In intention every human being wants to do what is right, only the competence
may be lacking which needs to be developed through proper understanding and
practice.
3. But what we are doing today is that when we are judging our self we are judging
on the basis of our intention, whereas, when we are judging the other we are
judging him on the basis of his competence.
4. We trust our own intention while we are not ready to trust the others intention. It
is the same for other as well. We find that while we look at our intention, we are
sure of it, we are not sure of the other's intention.
We are seeing their competence, and making a conclusion on their intention.

seldom = कदातचि, किी किी

4. Hence, mistrust is born and we deny the relationship. We seldom look at our
competence and other’s intention. It is very important to differentiate
between intention and competence. If we have trust on intention, we have a
feeling of being related to the other and we start helping the other to improve
his competence, if he does not have enough.
Samman :
Respect means accepting individuality and doing right evaluation (to be evaluated as
I am). Instead of respect being a basis of similarity or one of right evaluation, we
have made it into something on the basis of which we differentiate i.e., by
respecting you mean you are doing something special, because you are special or
have something special or are in some special position.
Thus, all of us are running around seeking respect from one another by trying to
become something special
Today, we are differentiating in the name of respect. We either differentiate people
on the basis of their body, on the basis of their wealth and possessions or on the
basis of their beliefs. There is no notion of respect in terms of right evaluation. Thus,
there is no real feeling of relationship, only one of differentiation

Differentiation = िेदिाव

Domination = Authority

discrimination = अंिर, िेदिाव

acknowledge = आिार प्रकट करना, स्वीकारना

preference = वरीयता, अतधमान

Difference between respect and differentiation

Respect is the act of holding someone or something in high regard, while
differentiation is distinguishing between two things that are not similar. Respect is
important for healthy relationships, while differentiation can lead to discrimination
and inequality.
It involves recognizing the uniqueness of others acknowledging their perspective,
and treating them with courtesy and kindness.
Respect is a foundation value in building healthy relationships and it contributes to
creating an environment of trust and trust understanding.
Differentiation is lack of understanding of respect
This differentiation can take the form of
Gender bias
Generation Gap
Cast struggle
Power play and domination
This leads to the escalation in the future of society which further lowers the respect
shown to others society
Differentiation in a relationship means appreciating and celebrating the individually
of each partner it involves recognizing and valuing differences in options,
preference, and personality traits
